A brother this Sunday morning shared on Rev 12 & 13, and had this handout he put together regarding the identity of the woman in chapter 12.  His take is that it is a composite of all God's people from the beginning.

Here are the 4 summary points from this handout:

1) The woman is clothed with the sun, and the sun is Christ;

2) The moon Under Her Feet - the moon is symbolic of the Law including all Israelites under'it -the moon only reflects sunlight, it is not the light source

3)  Crown of 12 stars on her head - before the law was given, His people lived by faith in His promises. (The 12 stars represent these early patriarchs of Israel.)

4: In Rev 12:17 the dragon goes after the rest of her children to make war with "the rest of her children who keep the commandments of God (Israel) and hold to the testimony of Jesus (the church).

Here is a copy of his first page, regarding being clothed with the sun (Christ) - representing the church:

Quote

Rev 12:1·A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars;

1. Woman clothed with the sun - representing the church

             a. The sun represents Christ

Mal 4:3 But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness. _
will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.

Matt 17:2 And He (Christ) was transfigured before them; and His face -
shone like the sun, and His garments. became as white as light.

Rev 1:16 (the Son of Man) In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength.

Rev 10:1 (Christ coming to take possession of the earth) I saw another
strong angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the.
rainbow was upon his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire.

             b. Believers in Christ Are Clothed with Christ

Gal 3:27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed
yourselves with Christ.

Rom 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision'
for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

         c. Believers in Christ Have the Unique Opportunity To Behold His Glory

2 Cor 3:18 But we all, with unveiled. face; beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the' same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

2 Cor 4:6 For God, who 'said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

I haven't followed the thread closely but sometimes symbolism in Revelation can be misinterpreted. It does need to be consistent with doctrinal understanding of the New Testament more widely.

I have heard some viewpoints on this topic but probably not all. Please share your thoughts on this. I will add a couple things later today on this topic.

I believe it is Mother earth being spoken of here

1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

Genesis 1

14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Isaiah 13

9Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

10For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

11And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

Psalms 136

7To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:

8The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:

9The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Well there certainly are a lot of verses pertaining to Christ as light and equating Him with the sun, so I think it stands to reason that being clothed with the sun could definitely mean being clothes with the Son.

We have first the Savior and then those who are saved and are in him.

He gave authority to them, the overcomers, to rule the nations with an Iron scepter.

He comission them to go and to conquer the Nations, and he was with them.  They conquered teritory that was under the controll of religious occult principalities. And they prevailed. Paul making inroads in Philippi and freeing the young girl from the divination Spirit...and the heathen ranged...the powers who control the area were taken down by a new spiritual power not known to them before..the power of God in Jesus Christ who had come to the Gentiles Nations...

The woman is not important to be intensified by name because of the weakness of the people. She was the chosen vessel and she was from the the devoted people to God of that time.

Hi DeighAnn,

Hey, thanks for that! Well these verses are certainly are speaking of the Earth. Good job. What are your thoughts on the 12 stars and some of the other matters in the passage.

The woman in Revelation 12:1 who is clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head, in my opinion represents mother Israel, which would be the Christian nations of today, and her descendants, many of whom are still alive today, who were chosen before the creation of the world and through whom the Messiah will come. Recall the dream Joseph had?  Joseph, the 12th, received a bow from the eleven "stars" (sons):

Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, "Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me."

- Genesis 37:9 (NKJV)

Or maybe it's what it says....   a sign in the sky

And I might just add for the fun of it, if so, it is a very very unique sign.
