What does "until he has put all his enemies under his feet" mean exactly?

...defeating all enemies...

Psalm 110 sounds like a simile or a saying of that era to indicate that Jesus's former enemies will be serving him. Would that include Satan?

Psalm 110 does tie in with the exalted and victorious position of the Lord Jesus foretold by Paul and the writer to the Hebrews.

There we read that the Father is making the enemies Jesus` footstool. (ready for judgment)

So God making Jesus's enemies a footstool for Jesus doesn't mean that they're serving Jesus but rather that they're "ready for judgment"? If so, is there any scripture to support this interpretation? Thanks.

Philippians 2 speaks of the Lord Jesus' exalted position; see vv. 5-11...........

On the surface 1 Corinthians 15:25 sounds as if Jesus is WAITING. He must rule "until". That describes Jesus as waiting. To me, the verse then describes Jesus's former enemies as serving him. I think Christians believe that the verbiage "are under his feet" is describing Jesus as destroying them and sending them to Hell. However, I don't think that's what Paul meant. After all, why would Jesus need to wait if he's just sending them all to Hell? Is Jesus waiting because he's waiting on his enemies to repent and to willingly serve him? That's what it sounds like to me.

The Philippians 2 passage shows His victorious exaltation.

Yes, all will say that Jesus is Lord! Is that specifically what you're referring to?

The passage indeed shows what a great victory that the Lord Jesus accomplished at the Cross; similarly, 1 Corinthians 15.57.

Good point there.

`For the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to EXECUTE JUDGMENT also, because he is the Son of Man.` (John 5: 26 & 27)

Hi Marston,

Interesting question.

Let`s just back up a few verses -

`But each in his own order. Christ the first-fruits, afterwards those who are Christ`s at His coming, then comes the end when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He has put an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.` (1 Cor. 15: 23 - 25)

1. Christ the first-fruits. Jesus ascended to the Father and sat at His right hand on His Father`s throne. (Heb. 1: 3) There He is building the Body of Christ till He has brought it to maturity in Him. (Eph. 4: 13)

2. Those at Christ`s coming. The Father will then send His Son to gather His Body and bring them to the third heaven where he will be crowned upon His own throne. (Acts 3: 20 & 21) That is the beginning of the restoration of all things, starting first with rulership.(Rev. 4: 2_

3. Then comes the end... The Greek meaning is `setting out for a goal.` And the goal there is for Christ to put down all rule, authority and power. (1 Cor. 15: 24) This Christ will do throughout the tribulation and on into the millennium. He will rule with a rod of iron. (Ps. 2: 9) When evil has come to a head in the tribulation then Christ will judge the Global Government and all those who follow the Anti-Christ. (Rev. 17 & 18 & 19: 11 - 21.  20: 1 - 3) In the millennium Christ will judge through Israel the nations of the world. (Micah 4: 1- 3) After the millennium Satan will gather the nations against Jerusalem, God will send fire down from heaven and consume them. (Rev. 20: 7 - 10)

4. Under His feet. This refers to the Lord having control over them and judging them as seen in the tribulation and millennium and after.

Hope that is helpful, Marilyn.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
