My understanding is that the Church of Christ does believe in Baptismal regeneration. Is that true?

yes that is true, and to make it worse all the leaders of the churches that I know believe that only members of the Church of Christ can baptize you...... so if you have not been batpized by a member of that church..... well it's the fire for you.

I agree with otherone. My granddad was a staunch coc and they believe they are the church and only church.

I did read however that out of all the protestant curches/denominations , that they have the highest suicide rate per some study that was done on suicide and christians.

I have heard the International Church of Christ called a cult before also, but not because they believe that Christ is the only way to heaven.

The ways in which it differs from Christianity:

1. You're not fully saved when you believe in Christ. To be saved you've got to be baptised too. They use Mark 16:16 as their support for their belief + baptism = salvation formula.

2. Generic Baptism isn't true or effective. When you're baptized you've got to be baptised as a disciple in the International Church of Christ by an ICOC minister.

Christ alone is not enough you've got to have their intense discipleship method. Only members of the ICOC are truly saved.

Their doctrine hovers dangerously close to salvation thru works.

I can't talk about the experiences of individual members of the church; they may believe in Christ for their salvation and not discipleship or baptism. I'm just talking about the overall doctrine of the church.

Galatians 2:16 Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God becasue of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.

Galatians 3:10 But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, "Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God's Book of the Law." So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, "It is through obeying the law that a person has life."

Galatians 5:2 thru 4 Listen! I, Paul tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. I'll say it again. If you are trying to make yourselves rith with God by being circumcised, you must obey the whole law of Moses. For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God's grace.

The members of the Church of Christ who almost converted me once loved to quote James... faith without works is dead. And they were right. Faith is active. However, salvation is not by works. Rather than pointing at the actions of someone who says they believe in Christ as their Lord and Savior and declaring them unsaved, perhaps the Church of Christ should correct their brothers and sisters in Christ, advising them on how to have a more active faith.

I also heard that they are disconnected from the Holy Spririt due to their fear of committing the unforgivable sin. At least a chapter in Houston is. :noidea:

Not true, at least not at any of the Churchs of Christ I've ever been to, anybody who has been baptized can baptize someone else.

Butero, I've heard questionable things about the Church of Christ all my life, most of it I personally have never heard before, except for the person telling me about it.

They do believe that since the Church is Christ bride, that the Church of Christ is the correct name to call believers.

They believe you have to be baptised to be saved.

No instrumental music in worship

No women preachers, women can't lead prayers, or serve the Lords Supper

They have the Lord's Supper every Sunday

They believe you are saved by faith not by works

They are very Bible driven the only stance or creed or what ever you want to call it is, Speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent. Or otherwise Do not add to or take away from the word.

Do I now believe exactly the above yes and no, Its awful hard to get over 40 + years, but I wouldn't tell somebody because of the church they attend they are not saved, I don't have a problem with someone using music in worship, because I've never had that, I actually perfer NOT to have music, I would rather hear the Saints voices raised in praise. And to be honest after being here, and talking with people and going over the scriptures with them and studying on my own, I not sure if I believe any longer that you must be baptised to be saved. I still worship there, its where I feel most comfortable, its where the Bible was teased, loved, drilled and read into my head every day of my life, and I truly appreciate the gift of knowledge that was given to me during my childhood/adult life there. Regardless of your agreement or disagreement with the way the Church of Christ operates, they usually have more people that actually KNOW what the Bible says, because its read and studied everytime the doors are opened. It isn't talked about in a by the way the Bible says........................its the BIBLE SAYS and you work your way out from there.

If CNN said it, it must be true..tsk...tsk. :)

Silentprayer, you mentioned about the Church of Christ not playing musical instruments, so correct me if I'm wrong, the church is not against instruments just not using them on Sunday. Correct? Now I remember being told this about a particular denomination but can't remember which, but they also do not play instruments, because they consider that to be work, and don't want to place a burden on anyone on their sabbath. is that true for the Church of Christ? If so, that makes alot of sense.

Butero, you are correct about instruments during worship.

The remark about people saying things about the coc were not directed at you, I was just explaining that most of the things I had heard about the church being "strange" come from those outside of it, not people who acutally knew something about it.

Please accept my apology if you thought I was directing that remark to you.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
