Natt, Onan's brother died childless. So according to custom, he married his brother's widow to produce children on his dead brother's behalf. Those children would be legally considered the descendants of the dead guy. (This is levirate marriage.)

When Onan spilled his seed, it was a selfish act and a breach of his promise to his brother.

There are Christians who call themselves "quiverfull" (yes, I am one of them). The idea of being quiverfull is not to have tons of kids, but rather to trust the LORD with this area of one's life. It happens that I have 7 kids. I know quiverfull people who have more children than I do. I also know quiverfull families that have very few children - even none.

I am personally opposed to use of birth control. However, as any Biblical grounds against BC are only implied, I would not preach on the matter.

I do think a strong scriptural case can be made that married couples are called to have children if they are physically able. How many children I don't think is defined at all. Birth control can be both artificial or natural, I think a case can be made for natural birth control, although I think as long as the artificial method used does not destroy a fertilized human egg, then it would be okay for a married couple to use it.

Of course outside of marriage the question is mute.

As with any area of our lives, childbearing should be given over to the Lord, although I would not go as far to draw the conclusion that birth control is wrong. Having children is a personal matter between a married couple and God. As with with many issues, the Bible does not give us a black-and-white answer. With these things, we need to ask God for wisdom and guidance, to ensure that we are walking to His path for our lives.

Can you imagine the legalism that would result from an all-encompassing list of sin in the Bible? Can you imagine how big and heavy the Bible would be? I'm not sure we could even lift it...

I think God expects us to be responsible. So let me get this straight, your going to have a dozen kids even though you can't support them or if it becomes dangerous to the woman. Wow I"m amazed at what people get out of scripture.

The point is to trust in the Lord. He will always provide. If He wants a family to have ten kids, He will provide the resources to support them.

Also what does this verse mean?

If someone can give a bit more clarity on the subject...Im not sure if the bible advocates only 'natural contraception' or 'natural family planning', and has a case against all other kinds of contraception within the institution of marriage, ofc?

if u are gonna get a verse its probably someone taking scripture out of context. but like the others said, the bible is mute about the specific methods.

but yea, birth control is really REALLY practical esp if u look at Lesser Developed Countries. i mean, it wouldnt be reasonable for a person living in poverty to NOT use protection/birth control
