Why do you add to the Lord's Prayer?

When I pray with Protestants, I add the "Protestant" ending to the Lord's Prayer out of respect for their tradition.

But, considering you are "sola Scriptura", why do you add to the prayer taught by Jesus???

The Catholic Church also uses this ending does it not? Maybe an incorporation of John 17 which is Jesus' final prayer and has echoes of the Lord's prayer. You're right, CS, I should not have lumped all Protestants under the "sola Scriptura" umbrella.

Catholics normally end the Lord's Prayer with: "and deliver us from evil. Amen." The "kingdom, power and glory, etc" ending is used in conjunction with the Lord's Prayer within the Mass. There is a short prayer between them:

" Deliver us, Lord, from every evil,

and grant us peace in our day.

In your mercy keep us free from sin

and protect us from all anxiety

as we wait in joyful hope

for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. "

I'm not sure why some Protestants attach the "kingdom, power, glory" ending to the prayer itself, but I believe it is found in the Didache.

The ONLY time I have heard that prayer used, and I mean only, was when it was sung at weddings. Oh, and the kids learn it in AWANA, and for Sunday School. I have never heard it without the ending, and I think it's appropriate since His is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever! So it's perfectly scriptural. And 100% true.

I do not believe Jesus meant to recite the prayer. "How" usually means in a way or like manner. Sometimes it's used as a greeting, but not so much anymore. Mainly he offered it as a tool to teach us how to pray, which, I might add, was JUST like Him.

I believe that the last line of the Hail Mary prayer is added, I am not sure it is from God's Word though. The reference for that is from Luke 1:28 & 42 right? From the KJV.

28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

So really someone took two different verses and put them together to create the prayer used today. Also two different "beings" said it. The first was the Angel, the second was Elizabeth. Why does this matter to you Fiosh? You know this is not supposed to be about denominations. It's about personal belief in Jesus Christ. What is so bad about Sola Scriptura anyway?

I have actually been in a Catholic Church while the ending was used. So it would seem that maybe it is regional or that each Parish operates as it see's fit within the confines of the overarching structure.

It depends on the version of Scripture you use. Either way, technically it's the disciple's prayer, not the Lord's Prayer, anyway. We say it at church most Sundays, mostly for the older folk who are used to it.

The ending is found in Matthew 6:13, as it is received in Textus Receptus, and in all REAL Bibles..........
