I'm giving up TV. But since I'm new at this lent thang I'm so excited to have learned that Sundays are Freebie days and Sunday I can't wait to turn on the TV and watch anything. I'm having withdraws and I find myself eating in front of the tv with nothing on and eating mindlessly banging on food till I turn of the tv for hours. Now i have to really think about what I'm doing. Before I knew about lent as a spirtaul thang I wish i still only knew about the dryer lent and belly button lent. This 40 day thing is harder than i thought. The only fasting I have done before was between bedtime and breakfast. I might even fast between bites of food for 40 seconds before eating the next bite and for me that was fasting. Its like people asking me if I run and say yes from the couch to the fridge beyond that no. I know this sounds funny but I feel that it is truly sad part of my life and I know other live like this and worse. What do you folks do to distract or positively change and replace this or other behaviors.

Lent is fasting but always done from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday, not including Sundays. It doesn't mean we don't fast other times, it's just a time when it happens. There is also a focus on almsgiving, giving of oneself in general, and in remembering the ultimate Sacrifice. It is in preparation for Easter.

Can you explain why Sundays are days where fasting is lifted? I don't undrestand the reasoning.

Lent is for 40 days. IF you look at your calendar there are 47 days between now and Good Friday. Sundays are lifted because it is the Sabath the day or rest. This was the explaination given me. Sounds good because you are suppose to keep the the sabbath day holy and devoted to God. So I guess since whats on tv these days is not holy and pleasing to God that I shouldn't but you have the option.

Well, I don't observe lent, BUt I am all for fasting. I don't necessarily think one has to fast during this time or even for the whole forty days. I really want to try what Jentzen Franklin does at his church. They will fast for long periods of time, but after so long, they will switch over to a Daniel Fast which is no meat, sweets, or something else. I forget what that other thing is. BUt in a month my hubby and i are taking a personal retreat down to IHOP for a few days of fasting. I am excited about that. The longest I have gone without food is 36 hours. that was my first fast a few weeks ago. So, I am looking forward to the next time I fast. I think also, fasting is something that should not be boasted about. I try not to mention it when i am fasting. I just go about my normal life. Kind of like when Jesus compared the prayers of the sinner and tax collector. Just some of my thoughts. I have only been a Christian for 3 years. I live in Mn and there are a lot of people up here who practice lent, so I am not unfamiliar with it. I admire those people who do it if they are doing it out of love for the Lord and not just because it is a tradition. God bless.

Hey well as I am a new Christian as of this summer I did not know about Lent which started yesterday - Ash Wednesday. So for 40 days we fast for something, although I am one day late I am going to 'give up' all chocolate for Lent.

So what is everyone else going to do for Lent?

What a great opportunity to show my Love for God and the body HE blessed me with. And since I know that God has been trying to show me that I need to eat a little healthier as I did when I was younger and I don't need the caffiene, first I determined not to ever buy drinks from Starbucks Coffee. Mainly because it will afford me the opportunity to donate my proceeds to a worthy charity I've been admiring and learning from for a while now And this lady has been affective in providing aid, homes, and food throughout the world. Secondly, I have started back on my on personal diet of low carbs, no breads, rice, starches and the like and no sweets.....I promise you , if you can achieve this diet for a few weeks, you'll feel like a new person, and you shouldn't crave sweets much at all. Try it , you'll like it. Anyway, I firmly believe that God gave us these awesome bodies to take care of for a while for HIS cause mainly......And it's payback time...I owe HIM bigtime.

Blessings

Odd, you'd think that the day you consider Sabbath would be a day to fast as well, rather than let loose.

Well I use chocolate as a comfort food - I have it everyday sometime twice (good thing I'm a serious skier, and I go to the gym or I would be overweight). So "giving up" chocolate for 40 days forces me to find someother comfort for a bad or stressful day - a lot of little things cause me a lot of stress (I have a stress disorder). So rather than using chocolate to 'feel better' I have to direct my need for comfort somewhere else. And who better to direct that need to than God, I believe that by 'giving up' chocolate for 40 days will help me to learn to turn to Him when things aren't going so well, which is what I should be doing. Anyways that's my reasoning for giving up something that may seem quite minor to others.

oh and eric pleeeeease don't give up taking a shower for 40 days...you may find that people around will start carrying around buckets of soap and water :emot-hug::rolleyes:.

Yet another good reason to observe Lent, I like that you are searching for comfort elsewhere.

The only thing I know about Lent is that I lent my umbrella to someone last week and I haven't got it back yet!

P.S. Which disciple ever practiced "Lent"? When & where did our Lord?

http://arthurdurnan.freeyellow.com

There is not a soul in the Bible that practiced Lent. It is never even mentioned in the Bible. Granted people did fast...which people still do today. But Ash Wednesday, Lent, etc...is a tradition that people began following to set aside time for rememberance of Christ's sacrifice. It's a time for people to draw closer to God by spending time with Him, rather than doing what they usually do. So if you give up TV, you spend that time in conversation with God rather than watching your favorite show. If you give up TV, and you decide to hang out with friends instead...you aren't really getting the point. If you give up eating out, then you are spending that two hours that it would take you to eat out with God. I don't think Lent is supposed to just be giving something up for the sake of it. Lent is sacrificing something so you can spend that time with God. I like some of the posts because they understand what they are giving up, why they are giving it up, etc...

If Lent is a fancy word for fasting Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days. Matthew 4:1-2 1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry

This is were the 40 days comes from. How they related to lent that i have not figured out yet?

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
