Hey everyone,

So what is marriage anyway? What is a good biblical understanding and definition?

I did a study about this and here is an exerpt from it:

The Sanctity of Marriage

Marriage is an establishment that is given and governed by God Almighty. Its ultimate purpose was to multiply the human race, but it was also for companionship.

(Genesis 1:26-28) Then God said, "Let us make people in our image, to be like ourselves. They will be masters over all life

What version of the Scriptures are you using? Sounds like a modern translation, but I'd have to go back to the original Greek on the passages you cite to see if they actually line up with what the Greek is actually saying. I have done this with several modern translations and found that they veer from the actual meaning in the Greek in various passages. The only version that remains consistently faithful with the original Greek, that I have found, is the King James version. I'm not a KJV only believer but I have found this translation to be consistent with the original Greek over the years. So I guess you could say that I am a KJV supporter primarily because of my studies with it in comparison to what the original Greek says.

And for the nitpickers out there, I do recognize that none of the Greek texts we have access to in today's world are actually THE original Greek texts as they came from the pens or stylus of the writers. All Greek texts in circulation are copies of the original, but they are faithful copies as the writings of the earliest church fathers (like Origen or Iraenius) who did have the original texts to study testify to. God has a way of preserving His Word that literally defies human logic, so I am confident that the texts we do have available to us are absolutely faithful to the actual original texts as written by the various writers of the New Testament. That should lay to rest the nitpicking position that we do not have access to the ACTUAL documents as they were written by the New Testament writers.

Hello fellow Ohioan.

I have at the bottom of all of my posts which version of scripture I use. It is the NLT Version.

Traditional Marriage Vows

To have and to hold,

From this day forward.

For better, or worse,

For richer, for Poorer.

In sickness and in health,

To love and to cherish,

Until death do us part.

How many here have taken these vows to heart? I have for 23 years now and will continue until the Rapture or one of us goes home to be with the Lord by death!!!

Hey JIME, I too have taken these vows to heart! My wife and I will celebrate our 19th anniv. this year. Hallelujah! I would like to comment on a couple of your comments though.

Marriage is an establishment that is given and governed by God Almighty. Its ultimate purpose was to multiply the human race, but it was also for companionship.

Actually, the original purpose, and I'd say it's ultimate purpose is companionship. Eve was created because Adam was alone, and later they were told to procreate.

Marriage has always been and will always be between ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN. Anything else is an abomination to God.

Actually, biblically speaking, polygamy is not an abomination to God. That is just not stated in the Word. In fact, God has recognized and even blessed polygamous marriages. Please don't misunderstand me, I believe that monogamy is part of the divine ideal for marriage, but it is not biblically legislated as the only viable form of family.

Marriage is a life long commitment that is severed upon the death of a spouse.

I would ammend this to say that marriage is "meant to be" a life long commitment that "should be only" severed upon the death of a spouse. Sadly too many marriages end in divorce; and divorce severs the relationship as well as death.

Just food for thought, and maybe for further discussion.

Blessings,

Sherman

THe key words here are what God has put together. Not all marraiges were put together by God and if they aren't they will fail. God doesn't consider it marraige either if he doesn't put it together.

I beleive you just repeated what I said. They could not do one without the other.

I believe that Exodus 20:14 covers this question,

I beleive that this statement is addressed in Romans 7:2-3, "Let me illustrate. When a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her. So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and does not commit adultery when she remarries."

Did you know that Paul was speaking in reference to Roman law? The wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives according to Roman civil law. This is something I learned within the last year.

Are you saying Paul is only quoting Roman law, and not speaking from God?

That's what I learned if I'm remembering correctly. The 'law' Paul is refering to is Roman. Sherman is more knowledge on this subject than I so maybe He knows for sure. Anyway that is what I remember reading.

I don't think so. Paul is refering to things Jesus himself said, it was aimed at men because men were the only ones that could instigate divorce in Hebrew law. Rome was actually pretty civilized, women could own property, run a business and marry or divorce on her on. Not through the entire history but most of it. Jesus put it alittle more bluntly a bill of divorce was authorized by Moses because of the peoples hardness of heart, not because thats the way God wanted it he said; if you divorce for anything other than marital unfaithfulness and remarried you were commiting adultry. Matthew 19 7-10.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
