Just wanted to plug some old tv series that we've been watching as a family:

The Walton's (great family value)

That Girl (modest, decent, for an upcoming young woman)

Alias Smith and Jones (almost forgot about this series) It's been a pleasant surprise so far, but haven't watched a whole lot of them.

We found all of the above at our local Best Buy store. One whole season (several nights of family tv) is less than one night out at the movie theatre for the family. It's been fun revisiting our memories of tv when hubby and I were kids. (We also have rented from our local library such titles as:

Gidget

The Partridge Family

Dragnet

Mac Gyver

Little House on the Prairie

The Cosby Show

Bonanza

Those are the ones I can recall right now.

:24: Along with the seasons listed Let us no forget Dukes of hazzard Looneytunes aniversery collection, House md and other great television shows. the family enjoyment is along what lines one feels comfortable with but those are also great programs..

I would LOVE to buy The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie but I don't think you can get them over here. Unless anyone knows different........?

As far as family viewing, as Christians, we've got to be sure to put "good" things before our kids. We don't do any programs that deal with sexual immorality, or bad language, etc. So, I can't promote much of what is on tv today. Even with regard to adults, if we're watching it, but then telling our children, that these aren't good for them, it doesn't make much sense. Either something is pure, or it's not. If it's decent, it's of value for any age. Nudity and foul language and explicit sexuality are not good for anybody if they want to walk in the Spirit.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.

I agree that you have to be careful what you watch. I f its not suitable for my son then chances are its not suitable for me. he is 16 now. But i wont let him watch stuff with bad language, sex nudity etc etc. Occasionally something catches my eye that isn't suitable for him but is for me due to the subject matter, but still no bad language sex nudity etc.

There is nothing worse than settling down to watch a good film and just getting into it when someone swears it is so annoying.

Ah well.

The thing about that is, there are subjects that are not suitable for children that adults talk about. It is also true that children are effected differently by things than adults. When I was a kid, an episode of the Twilight Zone about a killer doll was scary, to the point of bad dreams, but today, such a show is nothing. So to me, just because something isn't suitable for children, doesn't mean it isn't ok for adults.

So, do you disagree with my bolded statement above? Or is it a truth?

OK, here's one of my observations, with regard to Christians and morality. Why is Desparate Housewives a #1 show?

(Don't forget, 85% of us are claiming to be Christians AND watching a program with blatant sexually immoral practices!)

So, what are we in essence saying to our kids, when we watch these programs?

For what it's worth, my opinion is that nudity on TV is never acceptable for any age. You don't need to see it. Language is not as clear cut, but I would agree with your statement. Which is why we watch 40 year old TV shows instead of new ones. I don't like nudity, gratuitous sex and foul language in my house.

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house. 

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      Shalom everyone,

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
