Home School or Christian school are the only options I can even imagine for a Christian.

Yeah, that is in today's world.

If you are in a good public school district, probably public school. If you are in a not so good public school district, then probably home school. However, if you can afford it, your probably better off sending them to a good Catholic School.

Them? You mean other kids?

If your kids are in a bad public school, such as say an inner city school district, then your best bet as far as quality of education goes would be to get them in a good Catholic School. Whether you are Catholic or not does not make any difference as probably half the kids in Catholic School are not Catholic. Of course, that can be expensive, so its conditioned on the financial means of the parents.

That said, there are some great public school systems out there, and good public schools are every bit as good as good private schools. Its a question though of whether you are lucky enough to live in one, or if you can afford to move to one.

If you are in a public school district with poor academic performance, or issues with crime and or gangs, then you are much better off home schooling your kids if you cannot move to a better district, or cannot afford a good private school. If you can possibly afford it, in my opinion your kids will get a better education in a good private school, like a good Catholic School. The reason why is that they will get exposed to far greater diversity of views in a good public or private school setting than they will if they are home schooled. In my opinion, thats important because personally, I am not going to assume that I am right in my world view about everything, and if the only views my kids were exposed to were mine, then they would grow up with the same biases and hang-ups that I have. So if you ask me, the broader the world views that kids get, especially high school age kids get, the better.

I mean, we don't have to shelter kids as much as we think we have to sometimes. They often have more sense than we give them credit for having.

I must disagree (with the Catholic school recommendation).

I went to a "good Catholic school" for 8 years, and though I did learn my lessons well, many instructions done were at the hands of abusers, and enforced by cruelty that is difficult to imagine, administered by male-hating, embittered, evil women. Not all were that way, but there were enough of them to make up in cruelty what they may have lacked in numbers.

To say nothing of the lack of wisdom of allowing young boys access by the priests.

I am in something of a unique situation: I have some of my children in public school, some in private school, and one homeschooled. My brother very generously offered to pay for all the kids to go to a private Christian school. However, the oldest two got themselves kicked out of that school (one by constantly arguing with the teachers and principal, and once that happened, the other decided to get kicked out as well because he didn't like doing all the homework). Those two are now in public school and love it - next to no homework, Hollywood movies frequently that have no connection to the lessons they're supposedly learning, computers to play on the Internet - what's not to love?

The next kids are still in the Christian school, and bless them, they love their school. All four recently made the Honor Roll (and in a school where their A's and B's really mean something).

As for the one I homeschool, he was diagnosed with ADHD, and even on medication, he was floundering in the private school. His teachers, the principal, and I were all working with him all we could to get him to do his written work on which his grades were based, but to no avail. He knew the lessons and could converse intelligently on the topics - but getting him to sit still and push a pencil with like pulling teeth!

So... I brought him home. We do most of his work orally, and follow rabbit trails to his heart's content. I'm hoping that in a few years, he will be ready to rejoin regular classes, but for now, we're homeschooling - and yes, he loves it.

(Ok, so do I!)

Well, I do understand your concerns. I went to a Catholic School myself for a while too. Used to, nuns, regardless of whether they were suited for it or not, tended to go into teaching, this resulted in a lot of nuns teaching that had no business at all doing so. Today, most nuns go into other vocations, and only those actually suited to teaching end up teaching. In fact, most catholic schools these days have less than 10% of their teachers that are nuns.

As far as the issue of priests goes, I can certainly understand that, but a lot of changes have been made since then, you have to now sign a release for your kid even to be able to leave the building they are in. They really take the security and safety issues seriously.

I mean look I am not Catholic, so I am not talking them up because I am trying to sell Catholicism or anything. I am just saying that the Catholic School System is far and away the best in the world in terms of academic performance, and while they are expensive, they are not nearly as expensive as other good private schools. I mean, you find a good non-Catholic Christian school, and chances are it will be twice as expensive as the Catholic one. As to why, I have no idea.

In Canada we have government funded Catholic schools, so that is where I go. (I'm not sure how that isn't a violation of the church and state laws, but whatever).

If I lived in the US, I think I would want to put my child in a private Christian school (or homeschool them) up until grade 7 or 8 and then give them the choice to go a public school. I don't want to be worrying about the bad influence on my child until they are old enough to realize the lies that they are being taught without getting confused as a young child might.

Ok now honestly though, in elementary school, what "lies" are they going to be taught in public school?

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
