Not to be a naysayer or anything, but I'd rather not look at Revelations to see if something made up by a bunch of human sacrificing pagans is true or not. I think it's pretty obvious that nothing the Mayans had to say adds one iota to the glory of God and our Lord Jesus Christ, so we really shouldn't be paying so much attention to anything they had to say.

Anybody else with me on this?

Anyway, now that I've said that, I would like to comment on the whole "Mayan calendar" thing. I have looked at the Mayan calendar thing, and the truth of the matter is that not even they were predicting anything at all for that date (some time in 2012). You see, most civilizations are set up by egotistical morons who base the date of things around themselves. Kind of like saying "This guy is the new king now, so it's the Year Zero. Long live the King!" or some such nonsense.

The Mayans, on the other hand, thought there was a lot of imporatance in the way random space junk floated around the sky. They carefully calculated the periods they could observe, and then based their "long count" on the precision of the earth, so basically their calendar only predicts the moment that the pole star or some such is in the exact center of its wobble.

Visible asteroid to skirt Earth Tuesday

It won't destroy cities or cause huge tidal waves, but an asteroid passing by Earth Tuesday will give amateurs a chance to get out their telescopes.

Scientists at the University of Arizona discovered the 300-meter-wide asteroid last October while doing routine surveillance work for the Catalina Sky Service, a group that monitors any large objects that could crash into the Earth.

"It's not really all that close," said Ed Beshore, a member of the Catalina team.

At its closest point on Tuesday, the asteroid will be about 330,000 miles away, which Beshore said is rare for an object of its size. Though Beshore said the scientific community isn't enthusiastic about this asteroid, it does give people a chance to see some unusual action in the night sky.

"The sky is not terribly dynamic from minute to minute," Beshore said.

The asteroid, which will look like a moving point of light, is called TU24. Though Beshore said it would be big enough to take out Arizona if it hit, it's a fairly common discovery. Would-be astronomers will only need a small telescope to see the asteroid.

"We discover so many of these we stopped trying to name them a long time ago," Beshore said, laughing.

Scientists are more interested in an asteroid that will pass by so closely in 2027 it will be at the same level as communication satellites.

"That's much, much closer," Beshore said.
