There's Christians and then there's people who say they're Christian while doing the things I described, and more of the same. Like the Salvation Army, running hostels for homeless people... who're quietly asked to move on after a couple of weeks if they don't convert... to give just one more example. This is what people hear when you say "fundamentalist."

I do hold to the truths and commands of the Bible and those can't be changed. So I'd have to ask you, "what do you consider a fundamentalist? If it's a person that doesn't accept a church, for instance that caters to the homosexual community and doesn't preach the correct Word of God on the subject because they don't want to lose their following, then I'm a fundi! If its' a person who is agains abortion, and same-sex marriages, then I guess I'm still a fundi!

So I guess what I'm asking is, What is your definition of a fundi?

I'm not even sure it's a widely accepted distinction here. It may just be something I made up, I blame it on my philosophy training, y'know, making new distinctions.

Where I come from, a fundamentalist is a fanatic, blinded by rhetoric and unable to make allowances for an imperfect world. For example, I consider people who'd ostracise a female family member who fell pregnant outside of wedlock - regardless of the fact she was raped - fundamentalists. I could other words too, but they'd be unsuitable for polite society. The same would go for those people who teach Africans that using a condom won't stop them getting AIDS but will see them damned to Hell fundamentalists. I don't see anything admirable in being a fundamentalist.

Let's not forget, it's Islamic fundamentalists who're murdering civilians and soldiers alike in the middle east, and who long for the day when Israel ceases to exist as a sovereign state. I wouldn't be pleased to wear the same badge as these people.

i see where you're coming from - i guess fundamentalism has gotten a bad rap. that's a shame because of the real definition: being or involving basic facts or principles; "the fundamental laws of the universe"; "a fundamental incompatibility between them"; "these rudimentary truths"; "underlying principles" or as paul put it, "Jesus Christ and Him crucified".
