Ok so I think dreadlocks look really cool. I realise they are sometimes associated with the Rastafarians, but this isn't why I want to get them done. There is a passage in 1 Tim 2 stating that women shouldnt get their hair braided, which I think is cultural. Does anyone have any thoughts? Is it unbiblical  ? Does anyone have dreadlocks? Thanks!

1 Tim 2

8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

Getting Dreadlocks?, Would you do it?

Me? No.

I agree.

Is it unbiblical?

I can only think of two things to consider:

1) Consider what Paul said about eating meat sacrificed to idols. On the one hand, "all things are lawful." On the other hand, it is a sin to do anything that would cause another brother (or sister) to stumble.

I don't know if dredlocks have any meaning to the Rastifarians. I'd double check for that.

I mean, I could think a 5-pointed star sourrounded by a circle looks cool . . . but because it is a symbol that means Satanism to people I won't use it.

Another example: some guys see no problem with wearing a studded earring (at least for a time period, it was "cool" to some). BUT, if you wore the earring on a particular side (I forget if it was the right side or the left side), that was a symbol of homosexuality.

You get the idea?

2) Personally, I don't find dredlocks particularly attractive on females. But if they fit your personality, I wouldn't make a stink of it to your face.

Yes, according to scripture, your beauty should be inner. But often what we do with our outward appearance is a reflection of what is inner.

What I mean is, that Scripture shouldn't be used as an excuse to not take care of your outward appearance and look frumpy or dirty or un-kept.

See what I mean?

Just some things to consider before the Lord.

I used to think they were cool but personally they are not for me.

On another note Yesterday I wore my hair in a bun to church and encircled the bun with a bracelet of pearls. 1Tim 2:9 ran through my mind all day long. Wonder if I was being convicted? I took it down for evening service.

They were not costly pearls btw, I think I got them at the dollar store. :noidea:

well if I wanted dread locks, which I don't but not because I think there is anything wrong with them, I would just have them and not really care if someone found them to be against a "biblical principle" that is quite iffy when we consider that most likely 2 Tim 2:9 was a cultural thing...

oh and I think they look kinda cool too

girl get your dreads if that is what you like and let those who don't like it look the other way... :noidea: oops did I say that out loud???

I just learnt something today from this post, I had no idea of the Rastafarians so I Googled it......... Interesting.

Just as interesting is the number of "How To" sites for the perfect Dreads :D

Nebula has some really good points with symbolism. There does seem to be some religious significance attched in certain circles however from my personal point of view, when I see someone with Dreads I don't think of any religious affiliation, I think cool there's someone who digs the Jamaican way and generally hear Jamaican music in my head (little spacey, I know, but hey I'm honest).

Would I get Dreads... No, only because I know they wouldn't suit me. Do I like the look, I love the look on the right person, especially when girls do them with different colours and tie them up in certain ways. I think, I wish I could do that. :noidea::laugh::blink:

But the question remains. Is it right for you ??? I don't think the Bible can truely answer this one way or the other but what can is your conscience. I personally don't see how anybody elses hair can make anyone stumble in this day and age, we have a totally different culture to Biblical times however if God says no within your spirit then you need to go with that.

i wouldn't. and i'd have to take a skillet to my husband's head if he got dreads. to me they look like matted fur on a stray dog. not to mention you can't wash your hair with them, which means the person with dreads must have a really stinky scalp. and wouldn't it hurt? gosh, if i fail to wash my hair more than one day in a row, my scalp starts ACHING.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
