Ok a customer at work gave me a few books to read one was Debbie Macomber, A Good Yarn, Which I liked very much. :emot-hug: The other two were from Fern Michaels. Now the Fern books is kinda where I'm questioning, in her books she uses God's name in vain I try to skip over them but it's kinda hard to do when reading, but if I shouldn't never say it or think of it, I shouldn't read it right, Is it the same thing as cursing as you know any other cursing.

Words are what they are, words. In a book, the character is speaking, not you. But I would say, if it troubles you, don't read the books. Does hearing them on TV also bother you?

I am going to say that reading a curse word is not the same as saying it yourself. Its like hearding them in a movie theater or such. You can not put your self totally away from them. You can limit your exposure to them but idk, i like reading and just because it has a few curse words in the book doesnt mean im not going to read that book. Thats me though, hope it helps.

Rather than get into the 'name in vain' thing, I simply agree with Marnie.

I grew up in the Church of God, we didn't go to movies (1970s). We left the church, my parents returning to their Baptist roots (long story). My dad decided we were going to break with the taboo of going to the movies. So the first movie we saw as a family unedited for TV and at the theatre was Smokey & the Bandit. My dad said, "How bad could it be its got Jackie Gleason in it." :emot-hug: Well, if you've seen it unedited, Jackie Gleason's favorite expression was SOB delivered in a southern accent. My dad eyes got big every scene. But, he paid good money so we sat through it and caught ourselves laughing in spite of it. I don't remember going to a movie as a family unit again. Oh yeah, we saw Sasquatch.

But since that time, I go to select movies, which have cursing. We do become desynthesized to it with time. Now, if there is no nudity, we consider it fairly clean. We have lost our innocence haven't we? I remember Billy Graham was producing movies for the big screen pretty regularly during the 1980's. I remember he intentionally put the expletive "damn" in one of his movies to get the PG rating so people would go see it. Something to discuss there huh?

I try not to expose myself to anything that profanes God. It's one thing to end up around someone who curses, but it's another to partake willingly of entertainment that does this. You wouldn't read something or listen to something that continually spoke of your loved one by using a curse word to describe them, would you?

It's the same for God. We should love Him!

In His Love,

Suzanne

Please no one take offense at this comment it is just a subjective observation with no one in mind or any specific thread or any specific comment on this thread. I have been pretty heavily involved on the boards here for 2 months. It is interesting thinking back to watch overall trends and personalities. I think its ironic to watch people be adamantly conservative in one area and extremely open minded in other areas. It is unpredictable, somebody who thinks we shouldn't eat out on Sunday, may care less what anyone thinks about their consuming an alcholic beverage in public. Or they don't attend church anywhere, but insist Saturday is the Sabbath. Or have no problem with tatoos, but you had better wear a dress. Or its personal preference to smoke whatever, but don't go to a movie with a four letter word. Or Christian music better not sound like rock or hip hop, have you seen the latest slasher flick. Or vice versa on any of the preceding. I remember, when Christians used to say, I don's cuss, don't chew, & don't associate with them that do. :emot-fail: Christians didn't dance, go to pool halls, the movies, or play cards. And I am not dismissing my personal contradictions in any of these areas. I am just making an observation thats all. Take it for what it is worth. Aren't you glad the basis of our faith is grace and progressive sancitification, and God expects us to respond to our genuine convicting of the Holy Spirit whether we are in the first grade of development or the 12th?

I had a few story books which I started reading, but some of them they use Jesus's name as a swear word. I just can't get myself to read something like that. The first time I read it, I took those books and threw them in the dustbin. I feel satan uses even story books and movies to filth our minds. The more one just makes it out as just another story book or movie, and it's not you saying it, the more one gets comfortable with the idea that it's alright. It's just my opinion, but we must ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us in these things. If I feel uncomfortable about a book or movie, I know He doesn't want me to read or wathc it.

I understand being repulsed by our own cursing as a reflection of our soul. But why should we be repulsed by the cursing of someone else? If we are engaging the world for maxium impact our personal offense has to be put aside right? I certainly understand that entertaining ourselves with frequent profanity is wrong.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
