sunday is the first day of the week according to the bible, specifically the new testament. 'the law' was abolished when jesus was crucified. jesus also made clear that the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. as the sabbath was/is a rest day, so also can sunday be for today's christian. it's not against god's present will for his children if they chose to not rest the entire day, however.  there will be no death sentence if you do some work on a sunday. thus, the harsher elements of keeping to the law have been eradicated from the christian life, unlike that of the jews before christ.  fear has been removed to some extent from our worship of god. we should still have a great deal of respect for what he wants out of our worship services, though.

The term "first day of the week" is used only eight times in the New Testament (the word "Sunday' is never used). Four of these occurrences (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2; Luke 24:1 ; John 20:1) are simple time references to the day following Jesus' resurrection, to the disciples' early morning discovery of the empty tomb. Note that the women brought spices to the grave of the Savior on the first day, something they would not do on the Sabbath (Luke 23:56) Two other first-day references relate to Jesus' later appearances on that same day (Mark 16:9; John 20:19). The second of these describes how the disciples were assembled behind locked doors for fear of the Jews. Certainly this cannot be construed as some sort of Sunday 'sabbath' celebration.

Paul once preached on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7); this is generally understood to be a Saturday night since, according to Biblical reckoning, days began with the evening. The next morning, he continued his journey toward Jerusalem. No hint of Sunday observance here.was in response to anti-Jewish bias in the Roman Empire. In order to curry favor of Roman political leaders, the Roman church moved away from the pure religion of Jesus and the apostles; it moved to accommodate the pagan, Roman world, of which Sunday observance was a part. Many Catholic and some Protestant writers cheerfully admit that it was church tradition, not Biblical authority, which brought about the popular acceptance of the first day of the week for worship.

Summary of the Facts

1. The seventh day was set aside for all mankind at Creation.

2. The Fourth Commandment, specifies the seventh day.

3. Christ observed the seventh-day Sabbath; He did not so much as hint that it would ever be replaced by Sunday.

4. The apostles faithfully observed the Sabbath on the seventh day- never on Sunday.

5. There is not one word in the Bible in favor of Sunday as a holy day; rather it was given to man as the first of six days for labor

The Corinthians were commanded to take up a collection for the poor saints of Judea on the first day (1 Corinthians 16:2); but the phrase "lay by him in store" indicates this was a private inventory activity, not a public religious activity.

The above are the only ones which speak of the first day of the week. , they prove nothing at all in favor of Sunday as a day of worship or rest. In fact, they indicate the oppositTE

Mobile 21, can you elaborate?

Which part of the post do you disagree with and why?

"Anti" is the lable used when there are no logical arguments.

I offer to debate doctrine in harmony if you agree not to use any emotional bells or whistles.

The Bible makes clear the Apostles recognized Sunday as the day of worship:

"On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight." (Acts 20:7)

So we know the Apostles understood Sunday as the day of the celebration of the Eucharist, no Pope "made that up".

Fill my heart

Fill this house

Fill this day, O Lord

I am weak

And I need Your grace

You are the only light

You are the Way of life

Fill my heart

Fill this house

Fill this day, O Lord

This is what I long for to be resting forever in the arms of my Savior and every day will be a new day of worship for the King of Kings.

No where in the NT does it say we must observe Sunday. You are free to, but it doesn't say anywhere that you have to.

See following link regarding "the pope changed the day"

http://www.bible.ca/7-4-positions.htm#catholic

I read it.

I quote from it:

"Catholics flatter themselves into thinking they made the change."

What "catholics"??? the two dubious quotes the guy posted????? (and even if the quotes are true it means nothing because any catholic can indeed be mistaken about something, it's not the doctrine of the Church)

The funny thing is that the guy who wrote this acknoledges the Catholic Church teaches the truth, and I quote here:

"Yet even Catholics have always taught that Acts 20:7, 1 Cor 16:1-2 and Rev 1:10 are clear Biblical references supporting the practice of worshipping on Sunday."

That's exactly right!!!!!! It's obvious this guy knows the Church is right but still wants to make up arguments to conclude that "the Church is wrong even if it is right".

Bottomline about Sunday is that all the Apostles understood Sunday as the day of worship under the New Covenant and this is why we worship on Sunday, there's nothing more to it.

Hey Marc,

there is a lot of error in that long post. I'll just hit the highlights.

-----

Christians always worshipped on the first day (Sunday)

christians should worship every day.

They state that they stopped keeping the Sabbath to worship on Sunday started with the apostles. None of say they kept the seventh day Sabbath.

If you will take the time to read the book of Acts you will see that it was Paul's custom to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath. The great "Apostle to the Gentiles" always went to the jews first (Romans 1:16). As usual (except in one place) this would cause a split of the synagogue and the folks who left were the new "church". No where does it say that they met for service on a Sunday. The text assumes you know that they were meeting on Shabbat...because again..this was Paul's custom.

There is one mention of them meeting for a Motza Shabbat (Saturday evening) and another mention of him traveling to pick up money for the poor saints of Jerusalem. He did this on the first day because he would never travel on a Sabbath. This is the reason churches meet on Sunday....it is collection day. (that's a joke but it is based in a degree truth)

They partook of the Lord

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
