Difference between Christian and Catholic

Hi Everyone....

I am wondering what is really the difference between Christian and Catholic religion? I know Chiristianity is what many other religions stem from, but what are the little differences?

Do Chirstians take the Bible literally and Catholics don't? I just really don't get it. I want to go to my town's Catholic church for mass and I want to be informed.

Your odds of getting a fair and accurate understanding of the Catholic religion here is iffy at best. While I agree with very little of their interpretation of scripture, I still consider most of them as Christian as anyone else.

Yes...Roman Catholicism is simply a branch of Christianity.

There is no need to separate the two.

Additionally, not all Christians take the Bible literally. Pretty much only Conservative Fundamentalists take the Bible literally.

Catholics place the Pope as the final authority.

Therefore they are wrong, in my opinion.

Yet I'd much rather be stuck in a building with a Catholic, than a muslim.

If it wasn't for their elevation of Mary, I wouldn't have a problem with anything else they do. Since I believe they can and do scripturally back up their assertion that Peter was set apart from the other Apostles and they DO NOT worship idols as some claim by praying to the saints. The Mary thing is the one that stops me in my tracks, I just can't get over it or around it.

i have many disagreements with the catholic religion and their teachings. that being said, i've known many catholics that were very good christians.

I was gonna reply to your post LadyC but since I don't want this to turn into a Catholic bashing thread (even though I have no doubt it will if the past holds true) it wont be because of me.

Suffice to say to the OP they ARE Christian, as to their form of worship, that is a call you will have to make for yourself after careful study of both scripture and their beliefs.

i would like to add a disclaimer... i don't necessarily agree with all that is listed in the protestant side of that chart, (i get confused between what is calvinism and what is arminiesm or however you spell it, but that one leans to the opposite side than i stand on...) so i can't guarantee it's accuracy on either part.

The Catholics have their own bible and they advocate prayer to Mary and the saints and dead Popes who are men and women made Deity by other men and not God.

True Christians preach intimate relationship with Christ and prayer only to Him.

The Catholic Clergy believe they are the only humans on earth who are appointed by God to properly interpret scripture and no one else on earth can do so.

But Christianity believes the the Holy Spirit will lead us to all truth.

Just to name a few but there are many more differences that are eternally significant.
