Hey Everyone,

Once again, I'm stumped with a question when someone asked me. I have to be honest, I have always been told that God does not speak to us in an audible voice, and that God primarily speaks through His Word, though the Holy Spirit does work in our hearts, it's the our teacher, convicter, etc. However, I have recently been accused of not believing in the trinity because I said that God does not speak to us audibly today, but I have no scriptural backnig. I'm wondering if anyone can answer this question "Does God speak to us audibly today" (in little or much detail) and whether the answer is yes or no, can you please provide spiritually backing for what you are saying beyond simply that God spoke to people in the Bible. While God doesn't change, how God interacts with us, in a sense, does change. Before Jesus died and rose again, there had to be a blood sacrifice. Hebrews says that we no longer need that anymore because Christ was that perfect sacrifice. That, in fact, did change.... things like that.

Please... I'm open to hearing anyone's answer really at this point :emot-handshake:

In Christ,

Crys

God spoke to Samuel the priest audibly in 1 Samuel 3.

Samuel heard God's voice and woke up and went to the priest Eli because he thought it was Eli who was talking to him at first.

Eli told Samuel that it was the Lord who had spoken to him.

One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple [a] of the LORD, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the LORD called Samuel.

Samuel answered, "Here I am." 5 And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

6 Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

"My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down."

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD : The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

8 The LORD called Samuel a third time, and Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!"

Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

i can't give you scripture, but i can say that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. i can also say that i have personally heard the audible voice of God.

is it something God does frequently? well of course not. it never was something He did frequently.

I do not believe these verses can be used to teach that we hear the audible voice of God since the end of the apostolic age. There are the texts:

John 10:16 - And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, [and] one shepherd.

In it's proper context, this verse refers to the call of the gentiles and adding them into the fold with the Hebrews. There is no promise of anything verbal here, only the spiritual.

Rev 3:20 - Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

This also refers to the call of the sinner to repentance and is not usually an audible thing. It happened to Paul (Saul) but that was before the close of the canon and not a usual occurrence. There is no promise here that this call or knocking is anything audible either.

These verses do not tell us that God speaks to us in an audible voice after the apostolic age. The audible voice of God was heard only by few people in either of the testaments. If it still occurs, it does not do so often as it would break the biblical pattern already set and I can say with certainty that God does not promise to speak to us audibly.

The only promise we have for hearing the voice of God is through the Holy Spirit, via the preaching of the word and through the scriptures.

I'm not saying God is not capable, He is quite sovereign and able to do anything He pleases, but there is nothing to indicate that He would do so that I have found so far in my quest to know the answer to this question for myself.

2 Cor 12:9-10

I would go with no and the passage that comes to mind is Heb 1:1

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe

There is nothing that in the Bible that comes out with the words "God does not speak to us audibly anymore, but I dont think there is a reason for him to like he did in the past

It seems that those that heard God's voice in the past fell into two groups, either they were going to be the vessel of some great action by God, i.e. Noah and Moses. Or they were being used to pass on God's warning to people.

God speaks to us in many ways, dreams, visions, His Word, in a still quiet voice, with a tug at our heart strings, and out loud.

when He speaks out loud to us, it is a very scary thing, you will know it is God speaking... it will make you tremble, and a person will fall to their knees.... most who hear His voice hear it in their hearts, in a small voice......

a man knowing there is a change in his life coming up, is seeking the Lord and one day he is questioning the change.... and not sure if he can do it..... and then he hears the Lord speak.......

You trusted me when you did this, and you trusted me when you did that, and you trusted me over here and you trusted me over there.....

The Lord was reminding him of all the areas that the Lord was with him and the circumstances that the man relied on God to get him through it... the voice? not quite small and still, and it sure was not booming, but it was audibly for this man, there was no one else around so as whether it was out loud it is not known....

God does speak to us in our language, and if we would stop.... look.... and listen.... but then again we are just too busy to stop and listen.... we are too busy to stop and read.... we are just toooooooo busy to even turn off the out side noise and just spend time doing nothing but being with God..... this is where our prayer closet comes in... no one around, no noise, no distractions, no nothing.......... NOTHING BUT YOU AND GOD....

I know I do not spend enough time doing this...very few people really do spend much time... and even fewer will spend the time required to reach the level where God is speaking to them in an audible voice......

The funny thing about this, I think, is that there are very few times in Scripture when it is mentioned what people "heard" when God spoke to them.

Samuel heard the Lord audibly when the Lord first called Samuel, but it does not state if he heard the Lord's audible voice after that.

We don't know how the Lord spoke to Noah or Abraham or any of the prophets.

Only once does it mention the Lord speaking with a still small voice - however, the Lord spoke to Elijah before and after "the still small voice" . . . so how was Elijah hearing the Lord's voice then?

Grace to you,

I want to bounce of Nebula's reply a little bit because it prodded my thought process and I get answers by asking questions.

Nebula said;

The funny thing about this, I think, is that there are very few times in Scripture when it is mentioned what people "heard" when God spoke to them.

That Word "Heard" sticks out like a sore thumb.

I guess the question is, "Will you Hear what He is saying if He were to speak to you audibly?"

Jesus went about speaking audibly all the time, matter of fact, He is bodily Ressurected and even spoke after that. The point I'm trying to make is that in all of His speaking not many actually heard Him.

I believe that God has a purpose in speaking and often we just aren't listening with the proper ears. Were looking for what we need or want and not necessarily what God wants us to hear.

I'm thinking of God speaing with Jeremiah and Jeremiah's first response is, "I'm too young, I don't have the Words, people won't listen to me, what about me and my personal protection......................" :emot-pray:

Do you want to hear Him and will you listen? :emot-heartbeat:

Peace,

Dave

2 Cor 12:9-10

yes Acts 9:3-6

i know the others verses i cited would be disputed because of context that said i do not study the Bible the way most people do since the Lord opened my heart to His truth through it .i have been reading and mostly studying on my own through prayer and His Holy Spirit ( tho i do attend Bible studies and church etc regularly)btw this does not mean i throw out context better add that to clearify lol.

i have found out recently that the way i am learning is called Pardes

i was not aware of the term or the meaning until last year but was a natural learning method from the first for me.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
