This has always been a touchy subject for me. When I was young I accompanied my stepbrother to church. The man at the podium began speaking gibberish. I asked my brother what he was doing and he said the man was speaking "tongues". I could not comprehend why someone who is speaking "in the spirit" would not be understandable. At the time I was not saved nor was I familiar with scripture. Even so I fully expected that someone who were "channeling" (for lack of a better word) the Holy Spirit or overcome by the spirit would be easier, not harder, to understand for the sake of edification.

Now, being more familiar with scripture and having been baptized in the spirit I am still asking the same question. When the people begin uttering gibberish from the pulpit I cannot understand what they expect to achieve. I can only surmise that they wish to convince the congregation that they posses some special or elevated status in the eyes of God. Such actions seem to me to show a lack of humility and are comparable to dancing with snakes.

This writing at PBC is by far the most detailed explanation of the gift of (many) tongues and its purpose. Even before I was saved I seemed to understand that such a gift would be for the sakes of the unbelievers and that the unbelievers would, and should, be able to understand what was being said.

Knowing this I can't help but be even more disgusted than I have in the past at what lengths some people in the church are willing to stoop to in order to glorify themselves. PBC even explains the false gift of tongues and the effect it is having.

Please read over both articles/writings and share what you think.

Dont let anything or anyone put you of a most wonderful experience of speaking in tongues, Jesus said, "The Beliver shall speak in tongues". Mark 16: 17.

"They were all filled with the Holy Ghost an spoke in tongues". Acts 2: 4.

If you have been baptised in the Holy Ghost you can speak in tongues.

Mark 16 also says...they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."

do you do these things as well?

here is the rest of the story from Acts 2...Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8T hen how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

which language do you speak when you speak in tounges? Are there people form whatever country's language you speak that are there to hear you?

Where does the Bible say that every one will be able to use the gift of tongues?

The gifts of the Spirit are not supposed to be about us. They were given by the Spirit to build up the body of Christ:

And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, or the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God's Son, growing into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ's fullness.

Ephesians 4:11-13 HCSB

We are to exercise them not for our own pleasure, but to be an expression of God's grace to other believers and to serve them:

Based on the gift they have received, everyone should use it to serve others, as good managers of the varied grace of God.

1 Peter 4:10 HCSB

As this discussion goes forth, please remember that it is not us who decides who does and who does not have the gift.

1 Corinthians 12:11

But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

The Holy Spirit will give gifts as He wills, even if one does not believe in them. Anyone who feels the gifts are not for today, you are grieving the Spirit and not allowing Him to work in and through you, but rather, trying to justify and understand what God has for us with our own minds. Please, be careful with what you believe and say.

1CORINTHIANS 12:7 "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to Every man to profit withal."

that is a nice verse, but it actually says just the opposite if you read the next few verses...

8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

so, I would ask again, where does the Bible say that the gift of speaking in different kinds of tongues will be given to everyone?

So your saying the Bible contradicts it's self. Or maybe it's misinterpretation that's the contradiction. Look at verse 11 again "But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will." Who wills? The Spirit or the man seeking the gifts. So take it into account with verse 7 you see it doesnot contradict itself when we see that the Spirit desires every man to have the manifestation as the man wills or desires(seeks if you will) "WHATSOEVER you ask for, believing you shall recieve." Remember the manifestation of the gifts is for the profit of ALL. Why would the Spirit pick one person over another? He is no respecter of persons. He gives to all liberally.

The "he' in verse 11 cannot be the man. The grammar does not allow for it:

But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each one as He wills.

1 Corinthians 12:11 HCSB

The spirit is the subject of the sentence. The verb is "dsitributing". What you are proposing is that the subject be shifted mid-stream to the man. There is nothing in the grammar of the sentence that would support or allow that. Verse 7 does not support that:

A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial:

1 Corinthians 12:7 HCSB

There is nothing there about "as the man desires".

Help me understand how you arrived at this conclusion.

I wanted to bring this up front one more time as food for thought. In post #17, I stated, an stand by, the following:

As for studying scripture about the gifts, I have done that for many years now. In my studies, I have found three different uses with tongues. First, there are tongues of other worldly languages, as in Acts 2, for the unbelievers. Then there are tongues for the church, as in 1 Corinthians 12, which is meant to edify the body. Lastly, there is the language that is used when the Holy Spirit prays for us when we do not know what to pray for, as we read in Romans 8:26, which is to edify the believer, between God and the one praying. The first two are meant to be spoken loudly for all to hear. The last is to be privately spoken, which is why it is said to be like moaning. Reference to this is 215 in the concordance, which describes it as being like groaning which are not capable of being adequately expressed in words.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
