U.S. and Israeli intelligence officials maintained a tight-lipped silence on the alleged incident. However, Russian intelligence sources reportedly said the ship was "an enormous floating dirty bomb, intending to detonate after exiting the Suez Canal at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and in proximity to the coastal cities of Israel.

"The entire cargo of radioactive sand," said the Russian sources, " [was] obtained by Iran from China (the latter buys desperately needed oil from the former) and sealed in containers which, when the charges on the ship are set off after the crew took to the boats, will be blasted high into the air where prevailing winds will push the highly dangerous and radioactive cloud ashore."

Several military web blogs have noted that had the ship's crew succeeded in reaching Israel's coastal waters with their deadly cargo, it would have been quite easy to escape the vessel in small boats and then detonate explosives on the vessel. The radioactive powder, which would have been blown into the air, would have been carried by the wind straight to Israel.

To my knowledge a dirty bomb is dirty upon explosion. Because it is designed to irradiate at extreme levels that have a half life nearly forever. Making the area where it was employed uninhabitable for centuries. If the pirates died from exposure it was more likely coming into contact with some arsenal of biological warfare. Reading deeper I see the alleged plot was to blow the ship up and scatter the agents. That would be a unique terrorist attack and has elements of 911 to it. But as the article says, Israel would counter attack with nuclear force and the Iranians, as much as they want Israel destroyed, are not going to do any untimely and intractable things that would ultimately cause their own great loss. They are way too devious for that. I think the story is a hoax. That does not mean the pirates did not get into something. Just means it was not intended for that kind if insurgency. I am fairly sure that a ship in Israeli waters is going to be on the watch list until it clears. If it were doing any strange holding maneuvers it would be investigated quickly. And that also raises the issue, did one set of pirates get the upper hand on another set of pirates? For if the ship had such a destiny all along, the crew aboard were also perpetrators. I can see the elements of a good movie in the plot. Hopefully that plot will not thicken in real time.

A dirty Bomb could be made up of any number of radioactove components, even spent Medical waste, in this case it was supposedly irradiated sand. If they came into contact with a pile of irradiated sand in the hull of the ship you betcha they wouldn't be feeling to well.
