Norman Mattoon Thomas

Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 - December 19, 1968), and some

of us are old enough to remember him running for President, was a leading

American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the

Socialist Party of America .

Norman Thomas said this in a 1944 speech:

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the

name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist

program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without

knowing how it happened." He went on to say: "I no longer need to run as

a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party

has adopted our platform."

I rather like this quote from Thomas... ``Most of us live by our group loyalties . . . but we have to rise above them to the values of humanity so that we can co-exist lest we don't exist at all.''

Rings rather true, doesn't it? Blessings.

I think it would depend on the authors definition of " values of humanity ". The author could very well be insisting that you stop believing in God for the common good.

Hunter, I never thought of the quote as meaning that - I always associated his meaning with political parties and social causes. There is nothing that would ever make me stop believing in God. I have Salvation and being a Christian IS my life.

I know you to be a good Christian person. Just gently warning caution...especially knowing the authors foundation of thought. One could also ask, what is meant by " group loyalties ", specifically, what is meant by group, the republican party or a prominent church or religion or a well organized street gang.

I tend to be rather skeptical of these warm and fuzzy sounding quotes that use such vague terminology as noted.

My point was that the number of Americans taking it to the street were HUGE and what did it do to change the arrogance of Washington or the Department of Propoganda (NBC, CBS, ABC and 98% of media)???

Rick Perry is the only person who has actually voiced the frustration many Americans are feeling right now. It was crazy of him to do that and he'll likely lose the next election as a direct result, but I admire his Biden-like qualities of saying what everyone knows but are afraid to say.

It works fine for me on a discussion board but a politician (99.99999% lawyers) should be more careful about how it is worded

Well, it may not have done anything. Yet. But at least our voices were heard, whether they want to acknowlege it or not. The alternative was to be silent. Politicians up for reelection will have to listen.

It needs to be taken to the street that runs through Capital Hill.....I do believe there is such a movement in the works.

I know there are more tea parties planned for July 4. This isn't going away.
