AISI, who to confess to depends on the nature of the sin. When the Prodigal Son returned, he said to his father "I have sinned against heaven and in your sight". Similarly, sins against a marriage should be confessed to the spouse, sins against the Body should be confessed to the Body. That way both vertical and horizontal relationships are restored.

Even the passage in James talks about calling in the church elders. I see this as a sort of discernment/counselling/repentance session with mature believers. There's power in unity, and Jesus did give the church the power to pronounce the forgiveness of sins.

What I don't agree with is making canon law out of this stuff and saying it's the only way for all sins to be confessed.

I get were the catholic church is comming from. Confessing heals us and it is someone to confide in without much fear of shouting your sin in the street. Realy though people who abuse confession probably dont have a very good relationship with the Lord in the first place.

1) " carry on the apostolic succession ".....by who's authority, and what scriptures support this.

2) " stand in the place of Christ "...I do not understand this at all. Please explain how Christ would need any human to stand in His place.

If catholic priests are supposed to carry on the Apostolic Succession, then why aren't they working miracles like the original apostles, you know, like healing the sick, raising the dead. Personally I cannot understand what makes them think they are in the line of the apostles. Jesus Christ is my high priest and he is sitting at the right hand of God, interceeding for me, I don't need another. And as far as the sacraments, the presence of the Holy Spirit while receiving communion is good enough for me. You don't need a "Jesus" stand-in, because he is already there in the form of the Holy Spirit.

A priest cannot forgive anyone's sins I don't believe. Jesus Christ sits at the right hand of God as our intercessor and he will forgive us our trespasses.

Through Jesus Christ, a priest can forgive a person's sins.
