Where In The Bible Does It Say Gambling Is A Sin?

I've tried to find where in the Bible it says Gambling is a sin and I haven't had much luck. Even doing a word search I never found the word Gamble anywhere in the whole KJV Bible. I've heard that gambling is a sin. Can anyone tell me where in scripture it shows this.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks,

Zotah

There is "no-where" in scripture that tells us that gambling is a sin. I said, this in the other thread that there is no sin in putting a coin into a machine but we are told that there are some miry places that we should stay far away from lest we get stuck in the mire.

Ezekiel 47:11--But the miry places thereof and the marshes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.

There are marshes and miry places that will not be healed and you don't want to get stuck in the muddy or miry places cause more than likely you want get out. I think the gambling casinos is one of the miry places we could get stuck in. By saying that as I said before there is IMO no sin in putting a coin in a machine but it is better not to get caught up with in it.

Well said!

I think the gambling "world" is sinful, not gambling per-se.

Big difference from playing some cards for quarters at your house and spending a week of wages hunched over a slot machine with glazed eyes for 12 hours. The casino environment is sinful it is "revelries" you can see that by just wandering through a casino the whole environment seems to me to be a place of darkness not for Christians.

But this is just my personal opinion I don't want to be judgmental about, there is no scripture that specifically calls out gambling.

I don't believe gambling is a sin. I used to occassionally play video poker and slots at a casino I stayed at in Nevada. It was just something to do after dinner. It was hardly serious gambling. I would play $5 in nickels while I drank free coffee and watched the ball game that was being shown on the tv over the bar. Even if I hit the jackpot, it wasn't all that much because it was only playing for nickels, so I don't think you could say I was after uncertain riches, and I hardly think I was coveting anyone else's money. Not everyone that gambles has the same motives. Some are looking to hit it big. Some are just looking for something to do for entertainment. I haven't gambled in a long time, whether it be at casinos or even the lottery. From an entertainment standpoint, I got bored with it, and from an investment standpoint, the odds are so great against winning, it is a waste of money. To me, if you enjoy gambling, and have the ability to limit yourself to an amount that won't harm your budget, go for it. If on the other hand, you are someone who has no self control, stay away from it. I have seen people blow their food money trying to hit it big. It may not be sinful to gamble, but it is addictive to some people.

Agreed; gambling isn't a sin if it's just for fun. But, if it becomes an addiction, it's an idol; just like drugs, alcohol or a myriad of other things. And all idols are forbidden by the Lord.

Hi Zotah , in Rom 14:23 says that , " whatsoever is not of FAITH is sin .

poor example, dan. playing scrabble is not an act of faith, nor is jumping rope, or going for a jog, or reading a novel, or playing fetch with fido, and yet none of those are sins. they are simply acts of entertainment. romans 14:23 is not referring to physical activities such as entertainment, it's referring to spiritual activities.

still a poor example, dan. eating pork chops can be a stumbling block for someone else.

it's not the action, it's the motivation. if you're gambling out of greed, with a hope of winning big, or if you're gambling away your rent money, that sort of thing, then it's a sin. if you're sitting down at a nickle slot machine with a five dollar bill with no intention other than to entertain yourself for a couple of hours, it's not a sin. at least not in general. it MAY be a sin for a particular individual if God has directly convicted them to never gamble. heck, there was a woman here once who entered one of these discussions, and she'd been convicted by God about ever playing any kind of card games at all. not sure why. i think she'd had a history of compulsive gambling or something. so in her case, it was a sin for her to even play a game of solitair, or for that matter, a game of "go fish" with the grandkids. and yes, she even cited those examples.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
