N.Y. Times columnist: Death panels will save 'a lot of money'

Left-leaning New York Times economic columnist Paul Krugman says the so-called "death panels" established by President Obama's trillion-dollar nationalized health-care plan will end up saving "a lot of money" for the government.

The comments from Krugman, who also writes on the New York Times blogs, came during a discussion of "Obamacare" on the ABC News Sunday program "This Week."

"People on the right, they're simultaneously screaming, 'They're going to send all the old people to death panels,' and 'It's not going to save any money,'" he said.

Another panelist interjected, "Death panels would save money," to which Krugman responded:

"The advisory panel which has the ability to make more or less binding judgments on saying this particular expensive treatment actually doesn't do any good medically and so we are not going to pay for it. That is actually going to save quite a lot of money. We don't know how much yet. The CBO gives it very little credit but, but most, most of the health care economists I talk to think that's going be a really, uh a really major cost saving."

The video has been posted on the Conservatives4Palin website, and it was Palin who was among the first to denounce the "death panel" concept in the Democrats' government-run health care plan. That's the idea that appointed government officials who under the plan will have access to medical records will determine if a treatment will be provided to a needy patient. Theoretically, that could be a death sentence for a patient denied a treatment.

Of course it will save money.

But if they are announcing this as a good thing - God help us!

Well, it's in the bill they are partying about. The ones it will affect aren't onto it yet.

By the time those folks figure it out, they'll be in their coffins.

While the OP in this thread is possible, saying that it will be so is pure speculation.

There are already people within Medicare that have been making these decisions for quite some time, and insurance companies have things that they will not cover.

I think we should wait to declare this the evil thing you are saying it is. Could be, or could not, and Congress can always take back the authority to decide who does what, and it's pretty good about snatching up authority.

It'll be interesting anyway.

This is too important to take a wait and see approach, especially when you consider that Obama already is on record saying some would have to take a pain pill rather than getting expensive treatment. With the system we have now, you can appeal a decision by the insurance companies, but where do you go when the government makes the decisions? The fact Medicare already makes these choices and they are a government run program should tell us what we can expect?

What the Democrats are trying to do is set up a government run insurance program. Yes, everyone will be covered regardless of pre-existing conditions, but all treatments won't be authorized. In other words, everyone will get mediocre insurance and the same lousy care. The national debt will continue to rise until we are bankrupt. There is no up side to it.

LoL, Obama was talking about a woman in her 90's dieing from congestive heart failure getting a $300,000 treatment for cancer when she couldn't live more than a few weeks anyway from her heart peoblem...... Quite frankly this conservitave Republican agrees with him..... and I really hate it when I have to do that. Geepers you guys/gals just blow everything out of context.

It's not wonder we couldn't convince the democrats not to vote for this thing, the way people carry things beyond reality just makes it impossible to get those who could have stopped it to listen long enough to do so.

This bill passed because most of the Republican didn't have a clue what was going on and they just spouted out whatever came along no matter if it was reality or not.

This bill passed because most of the Republican didn't have a clue what was going on and they just spouted out whatever came along no matter if it was reality or not.

A man came up to Obama and told him that his 105 year old Mother got a pace maker at age 100. He wanted to know if since his Mother had a strong desire to live, would that be considered in her being able to get it, and Obama told him no. The bottom line is that beurocrats would be making decisions about who lives and who dies and that is wrong. The reason we couldn't get Democrats to vote against the bill in enough numbers to kill the bill is because they support the government take over. Some pretend to be moderates, but they are all socialists, and they always find a way to get just enough votes to pass their Marxist bills and those in more conservative districts vote no. Few in Congress knew what was in the bill. Pelosi even said they needed to pass it so they could find out what was in it. This was a 2700 page monstrocity. The Democrats want nationalized health care, and Obama put a huge amount of pressure on them to pass it even if it cost them re-election.

The government is not taking over health care any more than it's already being taken over. They are going to allow across state lines insurance sales and they are gong to set up guide lines to do so. The states already do this.

As for medicare, they already decide what is and isn't going to be covered, so what's the difference. The pannels are just a way to accomplis the same thing with people who are in the industry. What is changing is who pays for all this...... and it's going to be We the People through higher taxes instead of We the People through tax breaks.

Folks, it's very clear that we are headed for something much worse than Socialism and that's National Fascism. :noidea:

Even a Sychophant Communist like Stalin saw the need to defeat this dangerous Ideology.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
