German court legislates wickedness

The BBC is reporting that a German court (Their Federal Court of Justice) has now paved the way for passive assisted suicide.

A top German court has ruled that it is not a criminal offence to cut off the life support of a dying person if that person has given their consent. The Federal Court of Justice acquitted a lawyer who had advised the daughter of a comatose woman to cut off her feeding tube.

Earlier the patient had expressed her wish not to be kept alive artificially.

The lawyer appealed to the federal court after a lower court had given him a nine-month suspended sentence.

The mother, in her seventies, fell into a coma in 2002 and had been in a vegetative state for five years when her daughter removed the feeding tube.

After the daughter's action hospital staff reinserted a feeding tube, against the children's wishes, but the patient died of heart failure two weeks later.

Germany's Justice Minister, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, said the Karlsruhe federal court ruling brought clarity to cases involving terminally ill patients.

The ruling does not legalise active assisted suicide, which is punishable by up to five years in prison in Germany, the news website Spiegel Online reports.

The ruling applies to passively assisting death through the removal of artificial life support. It makes this legal if the patient has given clear consent."

In related developments, the British government has refused to prosecute a former doctor who took a man to another country where he was allowed to commit suicide.

Whilst I do npt believe in murder ( or assisted suicide as it is called ) I DO understand how the family may feel .... 8 years of watching the body of your mum and knowing that she is being kept alive against her wishes

In cases like this it can also be argued that the doctors are " playing God " as without a tube being inserted and food being pumped into her this woman would have died a long time ago. Since she had apparently asked NOT to be kept alive by un natural methods are they not forcing their ideas on her ??

I have watched children being " kept alive " when they are more machine than human and in such pain that they have to have a drip feeding them with pain killers 24/7 and to me that is more the work of the devil than allowing someone to die with a little dignity

Until you have watched a once vital and healthy man become a wasted shell of little more than 130 pounds on a once thriving 6'2" frame and witnessed his body contort in vicious muscle spasms of pain - throat muscles no longer able to swallow; eyes no longer able to see .... months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds of nothing but agonizing pain from a horrible and terminal neuro-muscular disease, for which there is no medication, no cure ... you have no idea what wicked is. Medical science is wonderful and can do amazing things - but sometimes - there is nothing left to do ... This amazing Christian is loved and dear to me. He wants no feeding tube; no extraordinary methods to prolong this agony. And this morning, I am told that I have to let go - to stop seeking alternative care and new experimental drugs and new ways to keep this precious soul with me. I have to let God have him and I will do what he wishes - he desires to hear me play music for him and to read from his favorite chapter of John ... and to just be there and love him as I have all my life. He is sleeping an exhausted sleep right now - I know that soon he will sleep in the arms of God. After the last few weeks - if there had been anyway to spare him this abomination - I would have. God have mercy on me for even thinking that. Please pray.

I have had to turn a life support off of a loved one, it isn't easy . Feeding tube would be even more difficult, I hope people never put me on one.

I know the Lord, I love the Lord, and I'm ready to meet Him. I don't want to have that delayed beyond His timing.

Allowing someone to pass without artificial means is one thing. Euthanizing them like an old dog is something else. Governments in general need to refrain from this type of legislation.
