Was keeping the seventh day sabbath ever intended for Christians?

*ps.

I can see how 9 of the 10 commandments can be kept by loving God and neighbour.

How is the sabbath kept by doing these?

err..substitute kept for fulfilled maybe.

My personal view is that Jesus took the ten commandments that are actually given to us on the physical level. Don't commit murder, don't commit adultry and such. Jesus spiritualized the commandments into a complete way of life. We are not just to not comit adultry, but we are supposed to change so that we really don't even want to. Same for murder, we are not to hate our brothers or sisters much less kill them.

The sabbath is the same. It becomes a complete way of life in everything we do. Jesus doesn't wany you one day a week....... he wants you totally sold out to him every day of the week, not just sunday. Since the Holy Spirit comes to live with us in our bodies, we can include the Trio into every fascit of our lives all the time.

And so I would say that just as the others have been changed to the spiritual level, I think the sabbath has also.

I might add that a day of rest is really physically good for our bodies and our minds, but I don't think it has to be on the seventh.

A lot of the things the Israelites were given were just for thier own good. Most likely the old food laws would make us healthier, but they are not in effect as far as salvation goes.

And that's the gospel according to Sam........ and some of my closest friends tell me I'm nuts, so if you agree with them it's ok... but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Romans 14

4 Who are you to judge the servant of another ? To his own master he stands or falls ; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God ; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. 7 For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself ; 8 for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord ; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10 But you, why do you judge your brother ? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt ? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written, "AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME, AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE PRAISE TO GOD." 12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this -not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother's way.

Acts 15

1 Some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." 2 And when Paul and Barnabas had great dissension and debate with them, the brethren determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders concerning this issue. 3 Therefore, being sent on their way by the church, they were passing through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and were bringing great joy to all the brethren. 4 When they arrived at Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all that God had done with them. 5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses." [i believe we can assume Sabbath rules included in this?] 6 The apostles and the elders came together to look into this matter. 7 After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, "Brethren , you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 "And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9 and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 10 "Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear ? 11 "But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are." 12 All the people kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas and Paul as they were relating what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

James's Judgment

13 After they had stopped speaking, James answered, saying, "Brethren , listen to me. 14 "Simeon has related how God first concerned Himself about taking from among the Gentiles a people for His name. 15 "With this the words of the Prophets agree, just as it is written, 16 'AFTER THESE THINGS I will return, AND I WILL REBUILD THE TABERNACLE OF DAVID WHICH HAS FALLEN, AND I WILL REBUILD ITS RUINS, AND I WILL RESTORE IT, 17 SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK THE LORD, AND ALL THE GENTILES WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME,' 18 SAYS THE LORD, WHO MAKES THESE THINGS KNOWN FROM LONG AGO. 19 "Therefore it is my judgment that we do not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles, 20 but that we write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood. 21 "For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath." 22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas -Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren, 23 and they sent this letter by them, "The apostles and the brethren who are elders, to the brethren in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia who are from the Gentiles, greetings. 24 "Since we have heard that some of our number to whom we gave no instruction have disturbed you with their words, unsettling your souls, 25 it seemed good to us, having become of one mind, to select men to send to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 "Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will also report the same things by word of mouth. 28 "For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials : 29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication ; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell."

You can take these as you will.

I celebrate the Sabbath because Jesus partook in the Sabbath and also found many other reasons. I've been in many discussions on this, but I'll try to add some scriptural impute to this topic.

I personally believe in the 7th day Sabbath, No where scripturally does it say that it was removed. Now first it's important to realize that it's the first thing God blessed and sanctified, and He Himself rested on the sabbath, and it's the Lords day in the Lords commands, not the Jew's commands. The Sabbath is more than just what day you worship, worship Jesus every day, it's a day to set everything in your life aside, work/ everything, and rest rejoicing in him. Which I believe paints a picture of when we are caught up with Him.

Genesis 2: 1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Now we will celebrate sabbath in when Jesus reigns as king of the earth.

Now given it was the first thing sanctified, and the first thing God blessed. Lets look at the future, when Jesus is reigning as King, we are going to celebrate the Sabbath, and new moon festivals

Isaiah 66:23-24

23 And it shall come to pass

That from one New Moon to another,

And from one Sabbath to another,

All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the LORD.

24 “ And they shall go forth and look

Upon the corpses of the men

Who have transgressed against Me.

For their worm does not die,

And their fire is not quenched.

They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh

Now given it was in the beginning and going to be in the end, what about the middle?

one famous verses used to try to disprove a Sabbath is Colossians. But keep in mind it doesn't say if You partake or not, but makes clear that they are a shadow of things to come, not that had had come.

Colossians 2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Now many people use this verse without looking at the context. The context is referring to ceremonial laws, and the Talmud which was not scripture, but man made regulations. verse 20-21 show that this is about regulation behind the sabbath instead of partaking in the sabbath in general.

Colossians 2:20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,”

Now another verse used to try to disprove the sabbath

Romans 14:2-6

2 For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. 4 Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

5 One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks

Now, this chapter may appear to be talking about sabbath, but the context is food through the whole chapter. The old testament, and the Talmud is full of fasting days, keep in mind that this letter is directed toward a Jewish audience because Paul speaks as to those who know the law. I believe that the context of Romans 14:2-6 is referring to fasting days and the whole context of the chapter is wether to eat meat or not, fits. Also given how much of a big deal saying the Sabbath no longer applies would be especially to a Jewish audience it wouldn't be in an obscure passage it would be more direct, and multiple chapters would be included.

Another argument towards sabbath is found in Hebrews 4.

Now this is referring to rest saying that Joshua did not give us rest, so there remains a rest for Gods people, and makes clear that He who has entered into the rest Jesus provides has ceased from His works.

Hebrews 4:11

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.

Now this in no way means that the sabbath was taken away, It does say we have rest in Jesus, but keep in mind it also says let us be diligent to enter that rest. Now there's two good interpretations I've heard, one is sabbath is properly observed in Jesus and we have rest in him, and the other, The resting place, is the secret place of intimacy we have with Him. Living in His presence. I agree with both interpretations.

I personally thing the sabbath paints a picture of when we're united in our Messiah. A day to God is as 1000 years

2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

So a day to God is as a thousand years to man, Biblically the earth is around 6000 years, And He is going to reign 1000 years.

Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years

So anyways ya, I believe in the Sabbath, many people who do not follow the sabbath believe it's a bondage, but for me it's a joy to spend an entire day doing nothing but praising my Lord and seeking deeper intimacy. I try to keep it. I went from wondering about the sabbath to following it, so my advice, seek God, live in Spirit and let Him lead you.

One day our eyes will be opened to the truth and it is easy to make the bible say what we want to and I am not exempting myself from that statement either. We are mere Human with all frailties and sometimes I am too human coupled with the mistakes..

But in regard to the Sabbath being done away with is a resounding Yes otherwise we would still be partially under the old law that was found wanting. Something man had a trouble keeping up with. In Romans 14 while Paul was talking about food he also made it very clear by using the word Sabbath. If it did not apply to the Sabbath also why even bring that point up? The reason he did was because it went with the old Law.

The same scripture in Romans 14 also shows it as no big deal and while I choose to view one day as all others, should another choose to observe the Sabbath it is not my right to disagree with them because they chose to observe one day above all others.

All we are told which ever it is you do, be fully convinced in your own mind.

It is funny this subject came up I was having problems putting together my first blog ever and have just finished writing the first 3 posts and if you believe in dumb luck or like me perhaps I was guided by the spirit I have just finished an article on whether Christians should obey the Sabbath The Blog address is in my signature below. Feel free to comment on anything even when I make mistakes and as I said before Mistakes are easy for me

But Paul didn't use the word "Sabbath" He just simply said observing days, in a chapter that the whole context is eating meat or not. "Fasting days" seems to fit to me a little better seeing how big of an issue this would have been.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
