speaking in tongues

Is speaking in tongues used today? What I mean, I know that speaking in tongues was done on the day of Pentecost, but did that "pass away" then? I have a friend who speaks in tongues, and I have seen others do it. I have heard some say that we do not speak in tongues today, and that today it is either "man-made" or the work of the devil. I have talked to several people about this, and they say they feel very spirtual in doing this, and believe is the work of the Lord. Others say that it serves no purpose and edifies only themselves. I am confused and would like to know what scripture backs up that we do not speak in tongues today (if that be). Please explain! Thanks!

I personally pray in tongues every day. I have since the mid 1980's. Long story as to how it started, but it lets a person pray for someone that they don't know personally and not ask God to do something that would ultimately hurt someone long term.

I find no evidence in the Scripture that any of the spiritual gifts has 'passed away.'

God has not pulled the Holy Spirit from this earth..... and Speaking in tongues is just one of the nine gifts.....

if speaking in tongues is not for today, then neither is interpretation of tongues, nor would prophecy be for today..... also we would have to do away with healing and working of miricles and discernment of the spirits........ in other words, if one was not for today, then none of them would be for today....

and if that is the case.....

why are we still praying for healings? and praying for miricles? and for that matter praying for anything??????

you see, it is a snow ball effect......

the first day of Pentacost, the first day of the Church erra, was not the only day that tongues was spoken........ there was an infilling of the Holy Spirit as People were coming to know the Lord Jesus....... there are many counts of Tongues being spoken in the new testament, not just the one day.... some were filled with the Spirit , baptised in the Spirit as soon as they "were saved" others before baptism, some during their baptism and even others afterwards.......

if the Holy Spirit is for today, then so are the Gifts of the Spirit for today.... for the Spirit is the one that gives them accordingly.......

as was previously said, I see no where that the Gifts of the Spirit have been removed from use.....

and as far as praying in the Spirit, such a wonderful thing God has allowed us to do, even when we dont know what to say, the Spirit interceeds for us......

I wish, like the other person, I could say I pray in tongues everyday, but I have gotten out of the practice doing it everyday.

But I do it often and with great joy. In private yes, it is of great uplifting of myself and fills me with such love and joy. In a group, it should be done with interpertation as Paul specified, so that all can be uplifted.

Now as with any gift from God, it has been abused by some. there are some groups that will say you are not saved or you have not been truely filled with the spirit unless you speak in tongues, that is not true. It is only one of many gifts, and there are much better gifts that one should strive for.

Sadly not all want the gifts that God has for us, and prefer to deny them. It is sad, they have God's love and grace, but deny the power that can go along with that.

That is so true Fr Chuck, there are some that do abuse the Gifts of the Spirit, and abuse the power of the Spirit..... as Simon the Sorcerer was wanting..... Simon had a spirit of control, or some say the spirit of python about him....

there are also those that say if you have never spoken you are not saved.... that also is not true, for it does not take speaking in tongues to be save, only the Grace of God thru the Blood of Jesus Christ..... we are to believe on Jesus, and follow Jesus as our Lord and Savior.... after that is extra......

however....

why would anyone accept a gift and not open it? we have received the Gift of salvation, but yet we don't use much of it at all, and it is all at our disposal....

there are many people that have accepted the Gift of Salvation and then place the rest of the package on a top closet shelf, out of view of everyone, and pretty soon they forget it is even there....

some of the reason for this is that people are afraid.... they fear getting too close to God, very simular to when Moses had been in the presence of the Lord God Almighty, and the Glory shining on his face was just a fading light of what just a slight view of God can do, and the people could not even stand to be around Moses.... he had to cover his face when he spoke to the people of israel.... they were afraid to get too close.... they wanted Moses to do all the work for them....

others don't understand it so don't want any part of it.... some may not disbelieve, but because a handful of people have misused/abused the power of the Spirit, the Gifts, they would rather not have them then to bask in the Glory of God and have the Gifts for use as needed for the Glory of God.....

I donot question that the HS is still here and his gifts are still active today. However what I do question is whether the "modern" Tongues is the scriptural tongues.

At pentacost everyone heard in there own Language. I see 2 forms of tongues biblically. The first use of the word tongues in the Bible is referring to speaking different languages, the second use of tongues is a Godly language that when spoken ALL hear in there own language.

God Bless,

Dave

I can appreciate your sentiments.

However, I know I have heard other languages that sound exactly like the "tongue" I have heard coming from the mouths of others.

Unfortuanately, I was never able to discover what that language was. But it was so aggrevating that I could not do so because I recognized it!

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
