cessation - a temporary or complete stopping; discontinuance: a cessation of hostilities.

What belief do you mean?  Are you asking why people cease believing? Or, do you mean Sensationalism?

Cessationism, in Christian theology, is the view that the miraculous gifts of the Spirit, such as healing, tongues, and prophetic revelation, pertained to the apostolic era only, served a purpose that was unique to establishing the early church, and passed away before the canon of Scripture was closed (comp. 1 Cor. 13:8-12 with Heb. 2:3-4). It is contrasted with continuationism, which is the view that the miraculous gifts are normative, have not ceased, and are available for the believer today.

Cessationism being the belief that Gods gifts stopped being practiced in the apostolic era..  Im not sure how many ways I can ask the question.  So..  Being someone that belives in Gods Gifts still existing, I guess I dont understand how someone can come to the conclusion that Gods gifts no longer exist.  Does the bible say the gifts of tongues, visions, prophecy, wisdom, among others, only existed until about 100ad?  If so where?  Where do they warrant the belief they dont exist?

When the church loses its first love and no longer performs the works it did in the beginning, it starts to believe in cessationism because it no longer sees the gifts in action. Just a guess.

To the OP

I'm not a Cessationist.   But from personal experience its two things.

1) Official church teaching.   I was originally taught Cessationism in the Lutheran church that I was catechized in even though as far as I know it was not a historic teaching of Martin Luther.   Saint Augustine in one of his writings speculates that miracles and other supernatural gifts might be waning.   (Perhaps they were only intended to help the early church get its start), but he never proposed a formal doctrine of it.    John Calvin however did.   He found himself debating a Catholic apologist who brought the issue up "that there were no miracles that could be claimed by Protestants" of the day, but Catholics did have various saints that had them therefore that proves that God is on the side of Catholics and not Protestants.   But to that claim, Calvin answered back that Protestants did not have any miracles "because they went away with the death of the last apostle"  (He took Augustine's tenative hypothesis and turned it into a full blown teaching).

2) Personal experience.   Lots of folks don't see any miracles etc. and this can reinforce the teachings of Cessianism.    I will also add that while I am Charismatic or at least open to that sort of thing.   Not everything that is claimed to be by the Holy Spirit is.   I'm not even talking about demons (though that is an issue), but just things like placebo affects, altered states of consciousness, psychosomatic illness etc.    For a number of years I had my own doubts about the legitimacy of supernatural gifts.   I thought charismatics etc, "read a lot into things" and imagine a lot of things because a lot of the Pentecostals and others I met seemed a bit squirrelly. :)

I can see believing in the decreasing existance in Gods gifts.  Naturally the more wicked the world gets and the further people grow from God the less you will see of them.  And I can also see imitations or faking prophecy being a possibility.  But to be so close minded as to call anyone that has a vision or tongues a liar, such as John MacArthur, without biblical support just blows my mind.  Not trying to offend anyone and I do apologize if I do in advance.

We believe in cessation because we don't see miracles. Why speak in tongues among those that believe? Why do we need miracles to show that Jesus is the Messiah?

Most of us have access to God's Word and more than enough other materials...we don't need someone to perform a miracle to believe in God.

However in other countries that may not have the same access that most have (ie Middle East, Africa, Asia) still see miracles. They still speak with other tongues, and people are still healed...etc.

Just my thoughts, I haven't done any research to confirm this, it's just what my position is on this currently is, but I'm open to correction.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
