Woe to them with child,,,why?

Yes, there are women that handle pregnancy well, but there are women who don't. My SIL for example during her last pregnancy had a very difficult time keeping any food down. As a result, she had minimal energy to function during the day. Try being on the run with that problem!

It would be equally troublesome to someone that is living alone and blind. Or a quadriplegic in a wheelchair. It would be suicide for a diabetic who only enough insulin for one more injection or someone that required dialysis.

As I stated earlier, I don't believe it's about comfort or ease of travel. I believe pregnant women and nursing mothers will be specifically targeted by the adversary. For what reasons, I don't know. All we can do speculate.

Civilization was very different then.

That's a good point, too.

Women back then didn't have baby formula, bottles, disposable diapers, diaper wipes, pacifiers, and a whole lot of other conveniences we have now.

Try being on the run with a young baby that needs to be breastfed every hour or two - and what do you do about diapers?

And Willamina is correct - a male figure trying to tell a woman that being pregnant is no burden or heartache is ridiculous.

Of course, that leads to the another issue - nutrition. Men who've had pregnant wives - what would you do if you were on the run with your pregnant wife and she had cravings for certain food?  (Guys, you want to share any stories of what it's like to have a pregnant wife with cravings?)

Cravings likely had to go without being met. Coin too could present an issue. So too could location. Imagine what the Hebrews went through went through when traveling the desert with Moses.

The siege of Jerusalem was one of the most terrible sieges in history.  Jerusalem was obviously a difficult city to take, being a city set upon a hill and defended by religious fanatics; so Titus decided to starve it out.

No one quite knows  what the desolating abomination is.  The phrase iself comes from Daniel 12:11. There, it is said that the abomination that makes desolate is set up in the Temple.  The Daniel reference is quite clear.  About 179 BC Antiochus Epiphanes, the king of Syria, determined to stamp out Judaism and to introduce into Judea Greek religion and Greek practices. He captured Jerusalem and desecrated the Temple by erecting an altar to Olympian Zeus in the Temple Court and by sacraficing pig's flesh upon it, and by turning the priests' rooms and the Temple chambers into public brothels.  It was a deliberate attempt to stamp out Judaism.

It was the prophecy of Jesus that the same thing would happen again, and that once again the Holy Place would be desecrated-as indeed it was. Jesus saw coming upon Jerusalem a repetition of the terrible things which had happened 200 years ago; only this time there would arise no Judas Maccabaeus; this time there would be no deliverance and no purification; there would be nothing but ultimate destruction.

Jesus foretold of that siege that unless its days had been shortened, no human could have survived it.  It is strange to see how Jesus gave practical advice which was not taken, the disregarding of which multiplied the disaster. Jesus' advice was that when that day came, men and women ought to flee to the mountains. They did not; they crammed themselves into the city and into the walls of Jerusalem fom all over the country, and that very folly multiplied the grim horror of the famine of the siege a hundredfold.

When we go to the history of Josephus, we see how right Jesus was about that terrible future. Josephus writes of these fearful days of siege and famine: "Then did the famine widen its progress, and devoured the people by whole houses and families; the upper rooms were full of women and children that were dying of famine; and the lanes of the city were full of the dead bodies of the aged; the children also and the young men wandered about the market places like shadows, all swelled with famine, and fell down dead wheresoever their misery seized them. As for burying them, those that were sick themselves were not able to do it; and those that were healthy and well were dterred from doing it by the great multitude of those dead bodies, and by the uncertainty there was how soon they should die themselves for many died as they were buring others, and many went to their coffins before the fatal hour was come. Nor was there any lamentation made under these calamities, nor were heard any mournful complaints; but the famine confounded all natural passions; for those who were just going to die looked upon those who were gone to their rest before them with dry eyes and open mouths. A deep silence, also, and a kind of deadly night had seized upon the city....And every one of them died with their eyes fixed upon the Temple." (Josephus The Jewish Wars, 5:12:3)

Josephus tells a dreadful story of a woman who in those days actually killed and roasted and ate her suckling child (6:3:4). He tells us that even the Romans, when they had taken the city and were going through it to plunder, were so stricken with horror at the sights they saw that they went away empty-handed.  "When the Romans were come to the houses to plunder them, they found in them entire families of dead men, and the upper rooms full of dead corpses....They then stood on a horror of this sight, and went out without touching anything." (6:8:5) Josephus himself shared in the horrors of this siege, and he tells us that 97,000 were taken captive and enslaved, and 1,100,000 died.

That is what Jesus foresaw; these are the things he forwarned.  We must never forget that not only individuals but also nations need the wisdom of Christ. Unless the leaders of the nations are themselves led by Christ, they can not do other than lead people not only to physical but to spiritual disaster.  Jesus was no impractical dreamer; he laid down the laws by which alone a nation can prosper, and by disregard of which it can do no other than perish miserably.

I've always taken that verse as meaning- Those with children during the tribulation will not only have their own suffering, but will have to watch their children suffer.

Ask any parent what is worse- for them to be in pain or watch their children in pain.

I think it is a bit of a warning as well.  Here in the end times I would be very hesitant to bring a child into the world.

This is right around the 6th seal. It is also around this point when John says that a group of people to great to number appear in heaven. I take this to mean this is part of the rapture when God's people will be taken to be with him along with unborn and newborn babies. People have argued this point for a very long time and we will not solve it here. But the Bible says seek and you will find. Knock and it will be opened to you. Ask God and you shall receive.

Question: "What is the abomination of desolation?"

Answer:The phrase “abomination of desolation” refers toMatthew 24:15 (KJV): “So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand.” This is referring toDaniel 9:27, “He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.” In 167 B.C. a Greek ruler by the name of Antiochus Epiphanies set up an altar to Zeus over the altar of burnt offerings in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. He also sacrificed a pig on the altar in the Temple in Jerusalem. This event is known as the abomination of desolation.

InMatthew 24:15, Jesus was speaking some 200 years after the abomination of desolation described above had already occurred. So, Jesus must have been prophesying that some time in the future another abomination of desolation would occur in a Jewish temple in Jerusalem. Most Bible prophecy interpreters believe that Jesus was referring to the Antichrist who will do something very similar to what Antiochus Epiphanies did. This is confirmed by the fact that some of what Daniel prophesied inDaniel 9:27did not occur in 167 B.C. with Antiochus Epiphanies. Antiochus did not confirm a covenant with Israel for seven years. It is the Antichrist who, in the end times, will establish a covenant with Israel for seven years and then break it by doing something similar to the abomination of desolation in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.

Whatever the future abomination of desolation is, it will leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that the one perpetrating it is the person known as the Antichrist.Revelation 13:14describes him making some kind of image which all are forced to worship. Turning the temple of the living God into a place of worship for the Antichrist is truly an “abomination.” Those who are alive and remain during the tribulation should be watchful and recognize that this event is the beginning of 3 1/2 years of the worst of the tribulation period and that the return of the Lord Jesus is imminent. “Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36).

Matt 24:

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth , let him understand) 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: 17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be .

Upon the time of the abomination of desolation, I understand this to be when the Israelites must flee - according to traditional teaching, I recall they flee to Petra <correct me if I'm wrong-according to traditional teaching>.  I can understand the praying that the flight be not in winter <cold journey, few available provisions> and that it not be on the sabbath <sabbath rules - x # of steps? highways closed?>, but those who are pregnant or nursing, this has always plagued me. WHY? I can understand not being able to flee quickly, or as conveniently as one who does not have young children (and why doesnt He mention those with toddlers if it were solely on account of fleeing Quickly?)

Your thoughts?

At this point we have come to the middle of the tribulation, the temple be set up in Jerusalem and the Antichrist will reign and all men will be ordered to worschip the antichrist. Failure to do that will end up in dead. The refusal of the people to bow down to the idol will soon be detected and therefore they have to flee and leave all their possessions. I believe it is at this point that the people will find their hiding place in Petra. They probably do not have time to gather stuff to bring with them, therefore it will be hard for pregnant woman ,old people, sick ..
