Hi I work for a Uk government department. Last month we all had an email sent around with the British governments take on it. They are against Scottish independence. It gave various basic reasons for it. Ranging from the historic to the current difficulties it may cause.

I think you can look up their stance on the internet.

I was reading in the news the other day how various international banks which may have head offices in Scotland, were thinking of moving to the UK if the Scottish vote was yes - the reason being because of the period of instability it might bring and the time it would take to pass it's own laws and decide it's own policies. Also some larges companies were expressing the same.

I suppose the other thing everyone is talking about is that the Labour Party would lose a lot of its MPs if it is a Yes vote and they get booted out of Scotland.

Financially I suppose there may be difficulties, at present Scotland receives more per head of the population from the British government than the rest of the Uk. If they vote yes they will lost that extra subsidy I suppose.

Authentic Scottish haggis has been banned in the United States since 1971, when the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) first took a dim view of one of its key ingredients - sheep's lung.

While millions of people around the world will enjoy, or endure, a Burns Night helping on 25 January, those in the US who want to celebrate Scotland's national bard in the traditional manner are compelled to improvise.

Some choose to stage offal-free Burns suppers, and for most people not raised in Scotland, the absence of the dish - comprising sheep's "pluck" (heart, liver and lungs) minced with onion, oatmeal, suet and spices, all soaked in stock and then boiled in either a sausage casing or a sheep's stomach - might be no great hardship.

But for many expat Scots and Scots-Americans, the notion of Burns Supper without haggis is as unthinkable as Thanksgiving without turkey.

According to custom, the haggis should be paraded into the room with a bagpiper before Robert Burns' poem Address to a Haggis is recited and the dish is served as the main course.

Haggis is organ meat grinded up in a casing, I get it.

I am down with organ meat, I will eat chicken kidney's and liver; the chicken liver is really strong, but I like it. I have yet to eat any heart's or brain's, but I am open to the idea. cool

Re: Scotland Impact

Scotland would have no currency in the short term. The UK says they will not let Scotland use the British pound. It would be over 18 months before Scotland could join the EU and use the Euro. A lot more time than than 18 months for the EU member states to vote to recognize Scotland. Scotland has an aging and small population of only 5.3 million. It will be difficult to sustain said population in the next 20 years without significant government assistence. Scotland's banks (Lloyd's and Royal Bank of Scotland ) are threatening to move to England if there is a separation. Then again haven't the Scott's been trying to get independence for 300+ years?

Re: United Kingdom impact

If Scotland seceded there's the question of defaulting on its share of UK's 1.3 trillion pound debt. It would also mean loosing 1/5 of the the UK's land and other natural resources besides oil found in Scottland. There is also talk of the UK Prime Minister being asked to step down if Scotland seceded.

Re: Europe and the rest of the world impact

A Scottish secession would have serious implications world wide starting with Spain and Catalonia. Around 55% of Catalans support succeeding from Spain. Also brings into question claims like the Kurds in the Middle East wanting their own nation. But not only that the UK is one of the world's oldest democracies... It would destabilize lots of countries.

Looks like Scotland voted and decided to stay with the UK.
