Hi,

I have been asked about whether or not I had access to something that was a good summary of Jesus's moral teachings. I have the link to the Jefferson bible, but it is a difficult read because it is written in old english. I would prefer something that summarizes many of his teachings but in modern english. Something I could pass on to people who don't really consider themselves Christians but through contact with me have taken an interest in Christian beliefs. This would really be helpful if anyone could provide me something like this, either their own post or some type of link. I am very excited that some atheists in my life have an interest in Jesus and this could really be helpful.

Matthew 22:35-40

Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

This sums up His teachings nicely.

A point is made in one of the written accounts when Jesus said to Nicodemus "You must be born again." and Nicodemus replied "How can I climb back into my mothers womb". The people and the disciples were always thinking temporal but Jesus was always speaking eternal. We will always have difficulties with His teachings as long as we think temporal. All the worlds religions and all false doctrine will get your eyes and hope in this world, this life, this time.

Jesus said to set our treasure in heaven. When we set a goal our actions follow a path toward that end. So to summarize His teachings in some Ghandi, Budda, psychologized new age hip everyone hold hands sing along simply misses what we have always missed since He taught, or for that matter from the very beginning.

We live in the here and now but our future is our reality. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross. Jesus prayed that we would have "His joy". John 17.

Sorry I don't have a text for you to read but this has helped me much in realizing the failure that is this world and me. Without Jesus we can do nothing. Eternally that is. :mgcheerful:

I don't really understand what you mean. Can you try explaining it again, using a different approach. I am having trouble "seeing" what you are saying here.

Well Jesus was speaking spiritually, Nicodemus was thinking physical. This is many times what we do in trying to understand Jesus' teachings. Our application is usually drawn from an earthly understanding, a physical human, this temporal world, understanding.

Spiritual - vs - physical

Eternal - vs - temporal

One of the opening sermons of His earthly ministry, the sermon on the mount, Matth. chs 5,6,7, speaks like this.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit."

"I say to you anyone who is angry with his brother is guilty before the court," - concerning murder

""Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and dust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys...."

"Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing?"

Jesus was 100% earthly good because He was 100% heavenly minded. When we speak of being to heavenly minded but no earthly good we are interjecting a worldly perspective of spirituality in that understanding. Something like a mountain top monk like existence. The best that can be achieve that way is a grand earthly understanding and peace. But as I have stated before Jesus prayed in John 17 that we would have His joy. We are told for the joy set before Him He endured the cross. Jesus said for us to deny ourselves, pick up our cross and follow. This is a struggle for me and many others. We have food, clothing, shelter, relative peace, carriers, businesses, event filled churches but personally I'm stagnant. My own delema.

Hope this helps a little, got to get back to work.

Yes, thank you so much. I understand it a lot more. I tend to think worldly which is why I have so much trouble understanding scripture, but I am getting better at it. I really appreciate you explaining it this way.

You're welcome, I'm not sure if what I wrote is sufficient but I do know with continued reading and prayer you will understand more of Him. Jesus prayed in John 17 that we would have eternal life "and this is eternal life, that they would know thee, the only true God." Jesus said "you read the scriptures because in them you think you have life, but they are them that speak of me."

Anyway just this morning I turned on the television and watched a few minutes of a religious program. The interpretation was completely physical, as pertaining to our gain in the here and now. Success in this life, sometimes when I click on a program it looks more like a real estate technique, buy my CD's, better your income and get that dream home sales program rather than the bible show it's sales itself to be.  Jesus was consistent about not being concerned about the body or provision but eating what God desires us to eat, the bread that comes from above, Jesus is the bread of life, He is the manna from heaven, He is the rock in the wilderness that brought forth water. "Man does not live by bread alone but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God"

Take a few minutes next time in a book store and read the front and back jackets of some of the "religious" books. They play into the flesh right from the start. A true man of God will be about putting your hand into the hand of Jesus. A pastor will know the only hope for anyone is a persons relationship with the Lord. The demoniac that was healed by Jesus was found by the people, who heard and ran out to see the spectacle of what happened, "sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind". Martha was troubled in the mind but Mary chose that good part, she was sitting at the feet of Jesus.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
