I think it is part of the Obama care law that requires electronic medical record keeping. Our clinic started that last year. I am 71 & my wife is 66. we now both have our own electronic medical records online which we can easily access. All health care providers we use that also use the same system will be connected & our records are automatically updated. if we use a provider that is not part of that record keeping system then we have the option to add those records ourselves from our home computer. We can request prescription refills, schedule doctor appointments, and pay bills online if we want; we don't but we can.

We both were required to have email addresses in order to do this, but becoming part of the system was by invitation only, we were not required to do this. That might have changed as of Jan 1, I don't know about that.

I have two, neither of which contain any sensitive information, and neither I could care if the government got ahold of. maybe their emails would be more interesting then all the nigerian scammers who somehow magically are able to find it. Though, they seemed to have stopped after I started messing with them, apparently, scammers dont like being scammed. go figure.

 

I have thought of goofing with those scammer emails also.  I click on them once in awhile just to observe the amount of grammar mistakes made by IMPORTANT people with IMPORTANT names and titles that are responsible to dish out millions of dollars to me. Rather comical to see.  But I am never brave enough to open the links to claim my fortune.

emails are actuall easier and faster, and more efficient then a phone call. You can program a computer to automatically email a patient about an upcoming apointment-no work involved, so instead of paying a nurse to take the time out of her day to call all the dozens of patients they have, the computer does it automatically and that nurse or secretary or whomever has more time to do other duties. From a practical side, it makes sense.
