Taking marriage out of the government's hand

The state of Michigan is reviewing legislation that would take marriage away from the government, and - with the exception of the issuance of the marriage license itself - putting it completely in the hands of the church.

 

"This week, state Rep. Todd Courser, R-Lapeer, introduced three House bills that would end government involvement in performing weddings and require that all marriage certificates be signed by a religious leader.

I was wondering what others thought of this in general - taking marriage out of the government and putting it into the church? To me, this seems like a good idea, since marriage is a covenant between two people and God.

now this is good legislation. They should just take the license out of it to.

So, people that are not religious are going to be required to go to a religious person to get married. That is just dumb.

If you want to get Government out of marriage then remove all benefits such as joint filing of taxes and such. If people want that they can sign legal partnership papers.

Someone who has the authority to marry people will furnish the license and after the wedding the people will take copies of the license and post it in county records.

Do you think that a priest/pastor/minister who believes that marriage is a covenant between one man and one woman with God should be forced to perform other types of marriages?

I believe if I understand right the couple still pays the license fees. What this does, is take the definition of marriage out of a governments hands. If a church only wants to marry straight couples they can, but if they want to marry gay couples they can to. The government will have no ability to tell each individual church who they can and cannot, marry. From an equality standpoint its really a win win.

Of course we know those on the left won't accept it as such, they won't accept anything that won't trample all over conservative Christians rights.

Except state of Michigan is of one religion (Christianity), then their would be some issues...
