The most common occupation among American men is driving. But the advent of the driverless car could put lots of cab drivers, truck drivers and limo drivers out of work in the not-so-distant future.

Automation may also replace the jobs of many retail salespeople, cashiers, office clerks and food and beverage workers, said Derek Thompson, senior editor of The Atlantic, in an interview with CNN'sFareed Zakaria that will air Sunday.

The second machine revolution is upon us and not only are such jobs going to be affected by automation, in 10 years it is projected that AI will take over many jobs including white collar jobs.

Many people will be out of a job unless they are able to differentiate themselves in a way which makes it hard for an AI to take their place.

An advantage of people over machines is the ability to improvise, to actually think about more than just a procedure.  People can innovate, make a process better.  People can come with ideas to streamline and save the company money.  One guy in my company a few years ago, found a way to integrate two printed reports so that employees in the company got one less piece of paper.  Over the course of two years, that one small idea saved the company over $ 1 Million.   AI can't do that.

AI will close the gap on this difference and we could find they eventually pass us by in this ability.

True.  AI will close the gap. Until they develop the ability to be innovative,  they will save companies money just by being there.  No salaries, no wages, no raises, no insurance, no holiday bonuses, no benefits of any kind will be issued and probably save companies hundreds of millions of dollars over time, maybe billions.
