That is the heart of Preterism. When it suits it is literal. When it does not suit it is metaphorical, symbolical, allegorical, etc. etc. In effect it is a dishonest handling of the Word of God. As to the Old Testament, there are numerous prophecies yet to be fulfilled. Prophecies pertaining to the first coming of Christ have been fulfilled. But His Second Coming is yet future, and there are many prophecies which relate to Christ when He comes "with great power and glory", and after He establishes His Kingdom on earth. I would be a partial preterist I think.

Some scripture is interpreted literally while others are interpreted non-literal. Any verses which apply to Jesus and the church are taken literally while scriptures which are positive blessings to the Jewish people are interpreted as non-literal and transferred to the church. Jesus return to Jerusalem which would apply to Israel are interpreted as completed in the Church rather then a literal to Israel. Rather then a literal thousand year reign of Jesus from Jerusalem, it is changed to the reign of Jesus occurring thru the church and exists today. I have never met a Preterist who wasn't also a replacement theologian.
