Permanent Human Genome Editing Is Here

  Now imagine being able to alter your DNA so that even your children and ALL of their descendants could never get leukemia…ever again.
  
  Well, thanks to a new technological breakthrough, this is now the reality.
  
  But is humanity ready for it?
  
  The International Summit on Human Gene Editingwrapped up this week in Washington, with scientists from the U.S., U.K and China debating where to draw the line on human “DNA editing.”
  
  Here’s the problem they are wrestling with:
  
  A new medical device — known as “CRISPR” — has made gene editing easier and cheaper than ever before.
  
  CRISPR acts as molecular “scissors” deep within cells, snipping out and replacing faulty genes. It is very easy for doctors to use…the first machine of its kind.
  
  Even more important, CRISPR doesn’t just edit one person’s genes. It edits their entire “germline” — meaning the changes to your DNA will not only effect you, but your children, and their children.
  
  In other words, this technology will “change” the human race…permanently.
  
  Proponents say this could mean removing many diseases from the human genome, and we should begin doing it immediately.
  
  Dr. George Daley of Boston Children’s Hospital, who treats children with terminal illnesses, put it like this:
  
  “If I can help [these kids] via germline genome editing, I have a moral duty to do so.”
  
  However, there are dark sides to this technology.
  
  Scientists agree that while this technology has profound benefits, we must be patient before permanently changing the human genome.
  
  For instance, it might turn out that the same gene that causes leukemia is also involved in preventing other serious illnesses, like heart failure.
  
  Additionally, what about people who want to go beyond disease cures…and simply “improve” the human race?
  
  Here are some genes that are already known to scientists, and could be edited into the next generation of children:
• The “short-sleep” gene, which lets people thrive on four hours of sleep
   
• A gene that prevents lactose and gluten intolerance
   
• A gene that can give anyone a pitch-perfect voice
   
• A gene that gives people a high tolerance to heat
• Where do we draw the line?
  
  There is even a gene that we know creates green fluorescent protein in the skin…someone could decide to create glow-in-the-dark children!
  
  And this is to say nothing about CRISPR’s ability to edit non-human genes…think tomatoes that stay fresh for months, or super-sized salmon.
  
  As you can see, this technology may have more power than humanity is prepared to handle.
  
  And yet, we have no choice…the technology is here.
  
  When the once-in-a-generation summit concluded, the scientific community had agreed to seriously restrict some types of gene editing…
  
  But they also agreed NOT to ban it.

I just wanted to share that with our love ones and brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus , there is Power in His name, and the words of scripture ,comes off the pages in the bible and into our hearts and we have gladness and peace and joy, for there is none other , that is able to give us peace and save us, amen..

As someone who suffers from coeliac disease and has had to watch so many of my families children be ill  just because someone wasnt as careful or as aware as we are over food I would LOVE to ensure future generations dont have to go through what we are going through 

As a family we also have several serious genetic problems that mean we have a 90 % higher chance of both breast AND bowel cancer than normal and one branch of the family have an illness ( cant remember the name ) that means 60% of the children die before they reach 30 years of age unless the illness is found before they reach teenage years .hmm would I be happy to see these things change ??? YES 

 

It is very easy to say we shouldnt interfere when we are not being affected but f we say that then we need to say NO to all surgery ,blood transfusions,  medical help of any kind as we should be happy to live and die without " un natural or non God given " interference in our lives 

Would I do this for fashion/ fun  reasons like being able to sing or change colour ?? NO  but for health reasons YES YES YES

I have seriously disabling illness due to genetic defects - I often could barely walk for instance.

My children are starting to show signs of the same problems.

I would love for these genes to be fixed.

But as the message I received said -  what happens if that gene also does something else we aren't aware of?  What if we trade on set of problems for another?

And what will happen to the human race when people decide to change it so much, inserting genes that could make people glow in the dark  - at what point would we no longer be human?

The problem is it's here.  It's not theoretical anymore.    The tool is here.   And it's going to be used for good or ill.

lol I agree but they still run to the doctor to get vaccinations when they go on holiday or when there are unexpected outbreaks of disease. Smallpox that used to kill millions is no longer a threat, leprosy is no longer a life threatening illness ( if you have the money for the vaccines ) .. Are vaccines abused ?? Yes  but I dont think we would want a return to a time without them. ANYTHING can be used for the good of mankind or abused We are after all sinners
