Then what I wrote agrees...because Paul is saying that a bishop cannot afford to have a mindset that sees impurity in everything, like some people do.

I used to live near a couple of churches, similar to what some of you attend. Sometimes while walking I would stop and listen under a window, and I remember a minister, was particularly adamant about censuring evil, especially fornication etc. I wondered if his congregation had a problem with it, or if it was just a coincidence that they all assembled at the same place. Years later it was discovered by the town that the minister was at the time sexually abusing his own five children, from infancy to the age of 12.

To the impure all things are impure aren't they?

So when you see immorality, are you angry because you cannot participate, and then call out hell fire as a substitute, or do you see poor, unhappy, tormented souls trying to escape life through hedonism?

To the pure all things are pure.

I doubt that the underlined text is permission to eat garbage. It's not about eating, note that it says "their mind and conscience is defiled," - not their belly.

DEFILING  EVERYTHING 15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

FALSE PROFESSORS AND REPROBATE 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Why did Paul say “To the pure all things are pure” in this context? Just as the scribes and Pharisees condemned the apostles for not ritually washing their hands as required by rabbinic traditions, and accused them of being defiled, these false teachers were teaching the churches that they must follow the Jewish dietary restrictions of the Old Covenant, and that some meats were *defiled* (e.g. pork) while other meats were *pure* (e.g. beef and mutton).  

This is the general understanding by commentators of this verse in context, and these comments by Matthew Henry bear repeating: To good Christians that are sound in the faith and thereby purified all things are pure. Meats and drinks, and such things as were forbidden under the law (the observances of which some still maintain), in these there is now no such distinction, all are pure (lawful and free in their use), but to those that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; things lawful and good they abuse and turn to sin; they suck poison out of that from which others draw sweetness; their mind and conscience, those leading faculties, being defiled, a taint is communicated to all they do.

The issue of clean and unclean meats is discussed several times in the New Testament, and the clear teaching of Christ is stated in Romans 14:14: I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.  Thus, “to the pure all things are pure”.

Can this in any way be applied to idol-worship, when the first and second commandments of the Ten Commandments  make it clear that idolatry is a sin, and the rest of Scripture calls idolatry spiritual “adultery”?  The answer should be obvious.

What he meant was that all things were lawful to those who are considered "pure" because NOTHING can change one's relationship to G-D when one has been justified by HIM!

It's similar to other passages:

1 Corinthians 6:9-15
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles (meat markets), that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

Paul's dilemma was that meat once sacrificed to idols was also sold in the meat markets along side meat that was never offered to an idol. However, idols are NOT gods because there ARE NO gods beside the One True G-D! So, meat is just meat. If G-D has provided the meat for you, it is PURE. PERIOD.

HOWEVER, there are others who don't have that confidence. The weaker believer who thinks there is something wrong with meat that was offered to idols, indeed it is wrong for him to eat it, not because there's anything wrong with the meat, but because he THINKS there's something wrong with it! For HIS conscience's sake, he should not eat it. Furthermore, any stronger believer who knows the meat is okay, should ALSO not eat it in the presence of the weaker brother or sister for that brother's or sister's conscience sake!

These passages are NOT about "pork" or "lobster" or "shrimp" or any other "unclean meat." This was all about "clean meat," "kosher meat," sold in the Gentile meat markets, some of which was offered first to idols (that don't eat the meat).

I learned these principles growing up by the mnemonic "FULWEG": Is it of Faith? Is it Useful? Is it Loving? Is it Worthy? Is it Edifying? Is it Glorifying to G-D?

4  And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people:
5  To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they offer in the open field, even that they may bring them unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest, and offer them for peace offerings unto the LORD.
6  And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and burn the fat for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.

A change of this law, is not independent of a change in kosher law.

Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house. 

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
