The loss of a unique garden

I found out this week that a favorite garden hang out is about to be demolished. It is a unique garden, one of only 6 like it in the us. It is at a chinese cultural center that got bought out. The new owners are removing all traces of chinese architecture and plan to demolish the gardens. 

The gardens are comprised of several replicas of famous chinese architecture. There are also fountains and a pond. It is a wonderful place to visit and I have spent many happy times wandering through it. I will miss this place.

Chinese cultural center in phoenix. There is a petition asking them to preserve the garden. There are calls for the mayor to intercede on behalf of residents of phoenix. But in the end, who knows what will happen. Except this company has gained only a bad reputation among those of us who live here.

Why on earth would they buy something beautiful like that, simply to destroy it????

The company is truenorth. Not sure what they do, but they plan to make it their company hq and permit current businesses that are there to remain there. The building/mall will get a face lift with all the asian features removed and modern steel look installed instead. They say they will keep the gardens but the plans are to remove all asian elements and give them to various chinese groups around the city instead. Basically the gardens will become ordinary with a pond and plants only. Just like every other garden in the city. Without the architectural elements to the garden, it becomes just a grassy lawn with ordinary  plants around the edges and a pond. Nothing special, nothing even that pretty by itself.

Its their right to do it since they own the property. I have no right to tell them what to do with it lol. Im just sad at the loss of a favorite urban space.

I LOVE googie architecture. One good example of it was bought out by an architectural firm. They restored it to its original state. Sadly too many others got torn down.
