Hi friends,

I've been listening to a lot of friends who talk of the gifts of the spirit and one more than most others mentioned is that of tounges. Many people say that if you don't have this gift, u don't have the holy spirit. I don't believe that. Though the gift of tounges is biblical, the fashion in which it is used today is questionable. If you pay attention to the 3 times the gift of tounges is used in the bible, you realized that the gift was given for the purpose of helping others, not to prove that one had the Holy Spirit. Why speak in tounges to people who all speak the same language? Tounges were given to help those in the congregation who were of a foreign tounge. Please don't be fooled about this. The bible says you will know them by their fruits. The fruits of the spirit are love, peace, joy, temperance, kindness, meekness, etc. Don't let anyone tell u that you don't have the holy spirit because u don't speak in tounges.

I am not condemning anyone, but if you have not recieved the baptism of the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of Speaking in Unknown Tongues, you may have the Holy Spirit "Moving upon you," but you don't have him "Living within you". You are in fact living with scant little more than the Old Testament saints had as it regards relationship with God.

I pray that all Christians come to seek the Lord for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Where in the Word of God does it show that the invoking of tounges is THE sign of the Holy spirit ?

IMHO, it is clearly defined in the Bible and by Paul that the speaking in tounges only edifies your inner man.

Why is the speaking of tounges most fluent in the Church then ?

I speak in tounges in the Church by the way, I am just wanting to learn and know how biblically sound is saying:

Speaking in Tounges is The sign of you receiving the Gift of the Holy Spirit.

I would think that tongues is an indication that the person has the Holy Spirit but is not the only fruit of the spirit.

I just went to a bible study on Thursday that explained tongues very well. I'm sure I won't be able to explain it near as well as the pastor did, but I will try.

The Holy Spirit can be IN you and UPON you.

In John 14:17 - the Spirit of truth, whom the world connot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be IN you.

John 14:20 - At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I IN you.

Colossians 1:27 - To them GOD willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gntiles: which is Christ IN you, the hope of glory.

Speaking in tongues is operated as You WILL.

I Cor 12:10 - What is the conclusion then? I WILL pray with the spirit, and I WILL also pray with the understanding. I WILL sing with the spirit, and I WILL also sing with the understanding.

When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, he is IN us.

1 Cor 14:2, 4, 13, 14, and 19

2 - For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to GOD, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

4 - He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

13 - Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 - For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

19 - yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

This is the Holy Spirit that is in you. Your prayer language where you speak to GOD. Man to GOD.

Holy Sprit UPON us. (Diverse Tongues)

1 Corinthians 12:10 - to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

Acts 1:8 - But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come UPON you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

1 Cor 12:28 - And GOD has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues

1 Cor 14:21 - In the law it is written: With men of other tongues and other lips, I will speak to this poeple: and yet, for all that, they will not hear Me, says the Lord.

1 Cor 14:39 - Therefore, brethren, desire earnstly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

The gift of tongues (diverse tongues) is GOD to man and through man, like in Acts where everybody heard there own language. Diverse Tongue is when Holy Spirit is Upon you. When Holy Spirit is upon you, you are making proclamations, as the men in Acts. The Holy Spirit was UPON them.

So, there are tongues that it is the prayer language GOD gave you where you speak to GOD. That is the Holy Spirit IN you.

And there is the gift of tongues, where there is an interpretaion or it is an unknow language to you, but might be a know language to another. Used to make proclamations in the Spirit. Also for intercession. This is the Holy Spirit upon you.

I go to 1 Cor 13. starting in the 9th verse to the end it tells us that all gifts will pass away when that which is perfect is here, However now we see only through a glass darkly. When Jesus comes we will be made perfect and the gifts will no longer be needed. The one gift that lasting and enduring is love.

We on the other hand are trying to find out if it is The Only sign of you being blessed with the Holy Spirit.

I speak in tongues. My initial experience I was so over joyed I began to have tears well up in my eyes. I speak in tongues on a daily basis. And some days more than others. It has a calming effect to know that God is listening and is going to take care of whatever it is I'm praying about.
