How do hear the lord when he speaks to me and discern it from my own voice in my head?

  • 2 years later...
Posted (edited)

Hello there,

So sorry for it taking over two years to reply. That should not happen, ever.

Basically, the way I see it is like this: If you have a good, positive, loving or intelligent thought, that is God speaking to you. If you have an evil, selfish, self-centered, angry, jealous or vengeful heart, etc, these thoughts are absolutely not of God, but are from the Devil. If it is good, it is of God. If it is not good, its father is the Devil, for sure!

Know this: Just because you don't hear a deep, thunderous voice that pronounces His Presence, doesn't mean he isn't talking to you. Every time you tell yourself not to do something, that it isn't right, who do you really think that is? Is that you? Or, is that the mind of God using the sound of your own voice within your own mind? Yes, you are being directed by the Laws of God as they have been written on your heart. God is using your mind to speak to you, telling you what to do and how you should do it. That does not come from your basic, standard Human Nature, for the Human Nature is that of a Servant. Servants don't spend much time figuring things out, but after Christ arose from the dead, His Laws were in fact written on our hearts, so as to guide each of us in the same basic and general ways. So when this happened, all of humanity began receiving guidance on a Spiritual level rather than the old and lower level of the Law of Moses being written on tablets of stone (For the Jew, that is. Gentiles were laws unto themselves.), etc.

I hope you're able to make a little sense out of what I've shared. I didn't go too deeply into this topic; there's a bit involved that a sit-down discussion would resolve. I hope you come back! That was a fantastic question that people could benefit from, should they decide to listen.

I hope you are well.

It's simple!

1) Be a born again Christian/saved if you're not already (trust JESUS for salvation, not YOU)

2) Ask the Lord to help you witness the gospel to others

3) Ask the Lord to talk to you, to tell you WHO to witness to, to help you power through the fear of witnessing, and to give you the right words to say

Good question.  I believe that God speaks to us in many ways.  He reaches us through the gospel, through the teachings of competent and true religious leaders, through the charity of those we meet in life.  But, the best, and I believe the most direct way to listen to God is in silence.  Each day communicate with God in prayerful contemplation, then just sit and be quiet.  We cannot hear God if we are always talking.  As someone previously pointed out, there may be the question of whether you are hearing God or your own voice.  God's message will always be one based on salvation through the grace of Christ.  This is a learned practice.  So practice often, daily if able.  After a while you should become comfortable in the silence of God who exists beyond the world of created things.

Go into a quite room and pray to God. You can not hear God when there is a lot of noise from our world. Just be still and listen for God's voice.

I can't explain the mechanics to you, because human words are inadequate. I can share a couple things and then an encouragement.

First be assured that you, as a son, can hear His voice.

John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me

He speaks to you thru the Holy Spirit that dwells in you. Your converted spirit bears witness to His Spirit in recognition that the voice is His. The Lord taught me this with a tuning an instrument analogy. When the two notes are the same, there is a clear 'like' resonance. They vibrate the same, so to speak. There will be that same 'resonance' between your spirit and the Holy Spirit speaking.

James 4:8 aDraw near to God and He will draw near to you.

James wrote the truth, here. This is an absolute certainty that you can count on.

As you draw close to Him in prayer and in each day that you are awake, keep an attentive ear toward him in your mind. When you sense a conviction on a thing or a prompting---heed that prompting. Say yes to Him. Agree with Him. Over time your senses will be trained to hear and heed more readily.

A still small voice, more often than not. Trust and faith builds with time. For reasons only our Father knows, this is more for some than others.

Encouragement: God does speak very clearly even in these days. He has not changed since NT times.

The top two ways G-d speaks to people is:

A: From the Bible.  Read your Bible.  That is the very voice of G-d writen down for us.

B: From other believers.  G-d will often send people to give a word.

G-d rarely if ever, talks directly to people.  If you are hearing voices in your head, then I would seek medical help.

God speaks through his word only.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
