Tongues is the same way. Jesus commands us to "recieve the Holy Spirit"(Jn. 20:22). In every case in scripture when someone obeyed they spoke in tongues.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

There is no way to argue rightly that God intends for baptism with the Spirit always to be accompanied by speaking in tongues. And Paul teaches plainly in 1 Corinthians 12:10 that God does not give the gift of tongues to everyone.

Absolutely

The church i go to is "an independant, fundamental,  separated, pre-millennial, autonomous, missionary minded, King James Bible believing local church which stands with the Lord in opposition to humanism, worldliness, new evangelicalism, and the modern day charismatic movement."

Can anyone explain the following terms...

1.independant

2. fundamental

3.seperated(differnce between that and independant?)

4. pre-millennial

5.autonomous

6. NEW evangelicalism

7. modern day charismatic movement

?

OK, I think I can answer these questions with a bit of authority. I am the daughter of an independent fundamental Baptist Preacher, the wife of an independent fundamental Baptist Preacher, the mother-in-law of an independent fundamental Baptist Preacher, the sister-in-law of an independent fundamental Baptist Preacher, and the mother of a theology student who wants to teach Bible , but who may also one day end up being an independent fundamental Baptist Preacher.

1.independant- We are not tied to any particular group or fellowship. There are loose fellowships of independent Baptists, usually for the joining together to send out and support missionaries, but there is no exclusivity. Our church for instance supports missonaries from 8 or 9 fellowships.

2. fundamental- our doctines are based solely upon the Word of God as our only rule of faith and pratice.

3.seperated(differnce between that and independant?)- We are clalled to live a life separated from worldly influences. Our dress, entertainment, and testimony should reflect Christ-likeness.

4. pre-millennial- Basically, that the rapture, tribulation and return of Christ will all take place before the millennial reign.

5.autonomous- Each church is self governing, not taking orders from anyone but the Holy Spirit. We like to say our headquarters are in heaven.

6. NEW evangelicalism- One Accord's post covered that pretty well. We don't agree with "easy believeism. We believe in true repentance and a changed life.

7. modern day charismatic movement- We don't agree with the modern day tongues and "signs and wonder" movement.

Someone made a comment that we "hate the book of Acts." Wrong I love the book of Acts, it is one of my favorites. It is a book of church history, not church doctrine. It is a book of transition from the Old Testement to the New.

Basically, I think that means 'RUN! (DON'T WALK) TO A DIFFERENT CHURCH.'

Any church so ornery and contrary they've got to define themselves that closely, simply isn't going to be a place for pleasant people!

There's a church in Phoenix called 'The Jesus-Name, Holiness Church of God in Christ, of the Apostolic Way, Believing and Teaching Acts 2:38'.  It was inhabited by a most unpleasant folk.......

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hey, Leonard, most people think I am a very pleasant person. Even my son-in-law likes me. We just feel that if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

WSB,

My parents have been missionaries in Asia and New Zealand for more than 35 years. My dad personally started 3 churches and 10 preaching stations in Indonesia, which in turn have sent out missionaries throughtout Indonesia. There are probably more than 100 churches ther now as a result of the Holy Spirit using my father. They are in their 70's now, but are prepareing to return to new Zealand to help a struggling churhc that has aske dfor their help. My husband and I ministered in 3 churches in the States before we came to Grand Cayman to build the work we are in now. We have seen many souls saved and lives changed. My daughter and her husband have been called to the mission field and are in the process of selling their home and preparing to go to the field that the Holy Spirit has called them to. We have none of us ever spoken in tongues, but we are in daily fellowship with the Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit.

What have you done?

I am not sure as to wether this has been adressed yet, as i am still reading this increaing thread...

I have never heard of baptists discarding Acts and Corinthians.

I went to a youth congress from Temple Baptist Church(the church that has the college i am looking at) and we were being given a challenge to read one chapter in Acts a day and to study it. Not to mention, my pastor is doing a study on the book of Corinthians right now. He has been on it since about last October. I have never heard of that before....

OK - how did a question about Baptist congregations get turned into a debate about speaking in tongues?

Look, it's not easy for us in our intellectual Western culture to understand the interactings of the spiritual realm, and there are certain denominations that make it in or out of their doctrine to have more or less interaction in this realm -

And it is amusing to see people who do not speak in tongues giving doctrine concerning speaking in tongues -

Being one who has received this gift I'm all for it  -

It's been an awesome help to my spiritual life!

But it is sad and tiring to see us at each other's throats over the issue.

Here's the description of the church in my locality:

"We are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ who have personally received Him as our Savior. He is the most excellent and enjoyable Person. We love Him and endeavor to give Him the first place in all things. We rejoice to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus, God

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
