Would you report a very close friend to the authorities if you knew he is about to commit a serious crime and he told you about it.

Wow, that's a hard question. If someone was going to be potentially harmed in anyway, and seriously, it would be easier to report such a crime. I'm going under a strong impression you were told this in the utmost of confidentiality. That puts you on the spot. Now what?

If it puts lives at risk, absolutely.

Are you prepared to take the same punishment as this other person - for accessory before the fact, which some jurisdictions call an accomplice even though you were not there.

I would report in a heartbeat.

Well, if he commits the crime, gets caught, and the cops find out that you knew (as in, he tells the cops he told you he was going to do it), then you also might be in trouble.

That's a very strong possibility.

This is the implication and it's extremely serious.

And the main point here. I would really dread this.

If he is involved in criminal activity then he is not a good friend. I would tell him that If he commits that crime I would then inform the police.

Have to report them. Failure to report a serious crime is a crime in and of itself.

Yes, if someone's welfare was threatened.
