Apparently its been there for years. He pulled the fabric cover off (which had been chewed through) and lifted the lid. The pack rat just looked at my dad. Then it saw me and bolted. He showed me the bowl of food he leaves for it. He hasnt named it but he cant bring himself to kill it. So she remains. Its a she. He has seen her nursing babies. Maybe he should name her buddy. 1 5

I don't think I would encourage a rat and leave food for it. They do carry disease.

That is correct. It does not sound like this was a human. So it was a wood rat? They still do carry disease.

Usually in the engine bay of vehicles that have sat for awhile or on top of the spare tire when its stored underneath the back of the truck or SUV. Quite a surprise when trying to change a flat . . .

Ah maybe not if he values his house (and even perhaps his life). Those things love to eat romex insulation off of home wiring, leaving the copper bare inside the walls. Having to rewire an existing home can be mighty expensive. I have seen entire runs of romex chewed through inside of walls when opening them up for remodel work. My own uncle had a soft heart toward all little creatures including the pack rats. His house was seriously compromised by their non-permitted and un-inspected "work"on it. Fortunately the "no name storm" came through and exposed the issue before anyone got killed in a house fire. Hard to bless over 7 feet of water coming through a house, but it was perhaps a bit of a blessing.

Almost all wiring is made this way so it's not just romex. they love the wires on our cars too.

It could total out your car. I have had mice settle under the hood of my car. They like it there in the winter because it is warm.
