I'm trying to find bible verses that warn people against being "too clever by half"/ "oversmart"/"overly proud about their craftiness"

For example, Job 5:13 is one example, and part of it is reused in a rephrased manner in 1 Corinthians 3:19-20

(Job 5:13)
“He captures the wise by their own shrewdness,
And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.

(1 Corinthians 3:19-20)
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, “He is the one who catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless.”

Another verse that is remotely related might be
(1 Corinthians 8:1b)
.......Knowledge makes arrogant.....

However, could someone please respond by posting some more verses that warn people against being "too clever by half"/ "oversmart"/"overly proud about their craftiness"?

You could do an online search for Bible verses that deal with being humble.

Rom_11:20, Rom_11:25; Pro_16:18-19, Pro_25:27, Pro_26:12; Ecc_7:16; Mic_6:8; Mat_18:1-4; Luk_18:11; 1Co_4:7-8; 2Co_12:7; Gal_6:3; Php_2:3-8; Col_2:13; Jas_4:6; 1Pe_5:5; 3Jn_1:9

Rom 12:3  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

  • There is an Old Testament idiom which speaks of pride and conceit in terms of having a "high nest".

Jer 49:16  Your fierceness has deceived you, The pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Who hold the height of the hill! Though you make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there," says the LORD.
Oba 1:4  Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," says the LORD.
Hab 2:9  "Woe to him who covets evil gain for his house, That he may set his nest on high, That he may be delivered from the power of disaster!

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. 19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
8 It will be health to your [c]flesh,
And strength[d] to your bones.

“Brothers and sisters, God chose you to be his. Think about that! Not many of you were wise in the way the world judges wisdom. Not many of you had great influence, and not many of you came from important families. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.

He chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. And God chose what the world thinks is not important—what the world hates and thinks is nothing. He chose these to destroy what the world thinks is important. God did this so that no one can stand before him and boast about anything. It is God who has made you part of Christ Jesus. And Christ has become for us wisdom from God.

He is the reason we are right with God and pure enough to be in his presence. Christ is the one who set us free from sin. So, as the Scriptures say, “Whoever boasts should boast only about the Lord.””
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭1:26-31‬ ‭

Why?

In the bible wisdom and foolishness are different from what most people associate with those words.

A wise man is someone who is a Christian, while a fool is an atheist.

I meet people who are sometimes so successful in their careers ( regardless of whether it's academics / business / regular work career) that I notice an arrogance about them because they talk about their successful career victories  with so much emotional pride, and they are Not humble.  (In fact, I sometimes notice that about myself when I do well at work, and I have to keep in mind that it is The Lord's Battle, and Not mine.  It's really dangerous to have Nebuchadnezzar's pride ( Daniel 4:30 The king [ab]reflected and said, ‘Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal [ac]residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?’ ).

It's so dangerous to have earthly pride because we tend to forget Jesus Christ.  Really scary.

If one starts with humility, knowing that one's salvation, one's intelligence,  and abi.ity is all from God, then that aroma ce is less likely to arise.

As for the arrogance  of the ungodly, if they don't  acknowledge  God in their lives they won't  acknowledge  the relevance  of biblical verses.

What really counts is the Christ like qua.ity of your life.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
