I think it's important to interpret scripture with scripture and in that light I would recommend a word study on pornē in Greek both the New Testament and Septuagint and zānâ in Hebrew. In addition, Babylon is defined as a "great city" and there's some interesting correlations there as well I think.

Spiritually harlotry was associated with going after other gods, something people have done around the world throughout history. Yet scripture has an almost singular focus on the apple of God's eye and it was His people with whom He made a covenant with, that He married. The first half of Hosea 2 speaks to a harlot mother, yet the second half speaks to her coming redemption.

It seems to me that scripture speaks of two sides of a people who throughout history have been faithful and unfaithful. Individually during each of those times some were faithful in the times of unfaithfulness and unfaithful in the times of faithfulness, but they were treated as one people.

A city is desolate except it be inhabited and that harlot that rides the Dragon is that great city, which is spiritually Egypt, Sodom, Babyon at the time being spoken of. It is a time of great deception and great apostasy leading to the revealing of the man of sin and his control as the little horn of the eighth head of the Dragon also controls where that city goes metaphorically and literally. The Dragon seeks her destruction, that being the destruction of her inhabitants.

Now there are many ways one can destroy and historically we've seen time and again a destruction by attacking of other nations. But when the Dragon knows his time is short and he is given the power to deceive, a dragon in sheep's clothing, he can also destroy in the eternal sense not by killing, but by deceiving. A branch that is cut off from the root does not die immediately, but without being fed by the root it dies and is cast into the fire. I believe this is why Yeshua's first warning to His Jewish disciples about the end was deception about a false messiah in Judea and the surrounding region. It's why this time is appointed for Daniel's people and why Jeremiah calls it the time of Jacob's trouble.

I believe the coming times will prove to be first a family affair, a putting to proof that will destroy families because of beliefs. Just as families turned against each other in the first century when Jews accepted Yeshua as the Messiah, so too will families be broken up when many accept a false christ that some refuse to. Only this time the false christ is part of the Dragon and if he can't deceive them into eternal destruction and away from God, then he will kill those he can reach. But when he is prevented from fully destroying them at Christ's coming, he will turn globally and attempt to finish either destroying by apostasy eternally or death temporally all that he can to establish his own doomed kingdom.

But in apostasy, believing the messiah is with them and seemingly having fulfillment of the world giving over their power and coming to Jerusalem to worship the anointed one, they will do his will and so will the rest of the world. And so the woman at the center of the false christ's kingdom and the world will be drunk on the wine of her fornication as the saints are cast into the winepress of the wrath of the Dragon before they are either removed or protected from him and Yeshua treads the winepress of the wrath of God and brings destruction to the seat of the beast and then allows the 10 kings to destroy that great city in preparation for His return to establish the true Messianic Kingdom over the ruins of wickedness in a show of sovereignty.

This is my understanding as of now. As I continue to watch and study God's Word I may find I need to adjust, and I'm always willing to do so as long as God's Word is the foundation.

It is not one city, the name Babylon comes from Babel (Confusion). In Rev. 17 & 18 we have a two sided coin, Religion & Government getting judged by God. Who confuses the masses? Satan and his demons. Who has power over all the cities/nations in this world according to Luke 4? Satan told Jesus all these kingdoms have been given unto me, and I will give them unto you if you will just kneel down and worship me.

So, in Rev. 17 we see an Angel shows John a vision, and it is only in verses 3-6. This Harlot woman is described, then we are told this is a MYSTERY, then we are given Three Descriptors that describe unto us who this Harlot is, meaning its no longer a Mystery

1.) Babylon the Great is a DESCRIPTOR here, nothing more. Babylon is world renowned for its FALSE RELIGION. 

2.) Mother of Harlots is another DESCRIPTOR, because FALSE RELIGION is the original Harlotry. 

3.) Abominations of the Earth also DESCRIBES who this Harlot is. God HATES all FALSE RELIGION.

So, God is telling us that the Harlot (False Religion) who rides the back of these [Government] Beast Kingdoms in that they all had false religions interspersed amongst them, are both going to be judged. God will use the Anti-Christ and his 10 (E.U.) kings to kill off False Religion, in that he demands to be worshiped as the only god. Thus they kill her and burn her with fire, simply meaning they forbid all religions except Beast Worship, and anyone who refuses to worship the Beast they will kill. She has the blood of the Saints (Jews throughout all history) and the blood of the Martyrs of Jesus (Christians) so False Religion covers all time on earth, and is in every nation on this earth, thus the MANY WATERS verse. The Scarlet and Purple verses is another clue it has nothing to do with the RCC because it represents GOVERNMENTS & RELIGIOUS ORDERS. Those two colors were very hard to create and thus very expensive, one came from a small rare bug and the other from seeds of a shrub in Egypt, thus common men did not wear these colors, only Gov. Royals or Religious Orders. Thus the Woman rides the Beasts back. (False Religion & Governments were co-mingled)

What is Rev. 18 about then? That is the WHOLE WORLD (Babylon under Satan's Dark rule over mankind) being Judged by God. NOTICE in vs. 2 Babylon (World) has become a HABITATION of Devils, and......Satan gets cast down at the midway point of the 70th week, AND Apollyon and his demon hordes are released at the 1st Woe !! Then in vs. 4 we see God says "Come out of her (Babylon/World) my people (Israel who repent) lest you partake in her sins and her plagues". This is God telling us about the 1/3 who repent and flee into the Petra/Bozrah area.

In Rev. 18:8 and 10 God says Babylon will be Destroyed in ONE DAY and in ONE HOUR, well, both mean 42 months. The Day of the Lord lasts 42 months. And as we see in Rev. 17:12 the 10 Kings rule ONE HOUR with the Beast or 42 months. This is not ONE CITY being Judged, its the whole world being Judged by God over a 42 month period.

Babylon Being Rebuilt.

 

The great city of Babylon passed through many Empires – Persian, Greek, Roman and later the Muslims. However, it became insignificant as a city with much being in ruins. Looting and zealous excavation caused significant damage to the area, till finally the site became officially protected and excavated by the Kingdom of Iraq, (1921)

 

In 1978 the Iraq government under Saddam Hussein began the `Archaeological Restoration of Babylon Project, ` reconstructing features of the ancient atop its ruins. These features included the Southern Palace of Nebuchadnezzar, with 250 rooms, five courtyards, and a 30-meter entrance arch. The Project also reinforced the Processional Way, the Lion of Babylon, and an amphitheater.

       

 

 

 

 

Saddam Hussein installed a portrait of himself and Nebuchadnezzar at the entrance to the ruins and inscribed his name on many bricks in imitation of Nebuchadnezzar.

The Future Babylon Project.

 

Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the area around Babylon came under the control of US forces. Much damage was done by military vehicles; however, the US are now working with Iraq leaders to restore Babylon.

 

This project is called the Future Babylon project. (2009)

 

Those involved will involve the local community and work to create a sustainable situation. Jeff Allen of the US side said, “The idea is to develop something that is going to be here 30 – 40 years from now and has benefits for the local people. We don`t want something that will only benefit outsiders.”

 

“If you have 200, 000 people a year coming to this site, you will have people staying at hotels, visiting restaurants, buying souvenirs,” Allen said. “The site is in some ways a revenue generator for the local community.”

 

The State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (SBAH) is the main authority responsible for the conservation of the archeological site. They are assisted by Antiquity and Heritage Police and maintain a permanent presence there.

 

The World Monuments Fund is also involved in research and conservation. The SBAH Provincial Inspectorate headquarters is located within the boundaries of the ancient inner-city walls on the east side and several staff members and their families reside in subsidized housing in this area.

 

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is spending millions of dollars into protecting and restoring – Babylon and some other ancient ruins. UNESCO has printed up a well-produced brochure, with Babylon listed as the premier destination, to hand out to wealthy donors.

 

The Babylon project is Iraq`s biggest and most ambitious by far, reflection of the ancient city`s fame and its resonance in Iraq`s modern political and cultural heritage.

Sure. 

The Chaldeans under Nebuchadnezzar, then the Medo-Persians under many kings, then Alexander and Seleucid after him, all ruled from Babylon the city; a physical city existing in Iraq to this day. Also of note is the Romans never ruled over Babylon, did not establish Babylon as the seat of power of the Roman Empire, nor was it the capitol of the Roman Empire.

The Islamic conquests ruled that area for 700 years and are still the main ideology in the region.

From Rev 18, Babylon the city is going to make a come back. The city is to be the center of trade for the entire world and will also be destroyed in one hour. 

Is that city Babylon in Iraq? If it is, who is in control of that city?

As of today the Arab peoples of Islamic ideology are in control of that region and the city.

History and current events and conditions point us to Islamic ideology at the end of the age, not a revived Roman Empire.
