Under the theory that it is vital to USA's economic and defense interests yes; just like Russia should take over Ukraine. Whatever is in the biggest dog's interest is what should be done, China should get Taiwan, Iran needs.... etc.

Let's look at the conversation that started it all.

The president-elect told the prime minister if Canada cannot fix the border issues and trade deficit, he will levy a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods on day one when he returns to office.

Trudeau told Trump he cannot levy the tariff because it would kill the Canadian economy completely. Trump replied – asking, so your country can't survive unless it's ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion? 

Trump then suggested to Trudeau that Canada become the 51st state.

So before answering if the US should take over Canada, perhaps we should first as if it is true that Canada would not survive without the US subsidizing its economy?

It was likely tongue in cheek, the whole subsidizing thing, but he's right, if Canada can't stay afloat without taking advantage of the US then they need to rethink their economy. 

It's like me saying I can't manage life without scamming people in fake duct work Facebook ads.

The american President Elect has been repeatedly talking about Greenland.. the Panama Canal.. (and to a certain extent Canada too?)..  as if he possibly wants the Usa to control or take over etc them etc....

Yes he has...but it's largely rhetoric, for example, his comment about Canada for example was sarcasm in reply to something Canadas PM said.

Just my opinion, but I think Trump and his counselors understand that Western Europe is in decline and that given the China problem, a Strong Pan-America is a good idea.

Think about Great Britain. Not long ago, the empire spanned the globe. Now a serious invasion of GB has tsken place as a result of their own choices. Same with the rest of Western Europe. Its not difficult to see the future.
