I would think it would depend on who took the body down.   I'm not sure if it matters enough to make a thread about.  I had enough trouble with the nailing part.

It's up for discussion, but historians attest to the Roman Army training its solders in all manner of construction techniques.

I tend to agree and why nails ? I can only come up with one answer . it the person was tied with rope it would be to easy for some one to get them free . nails are fore ever ,very hard to get out ,

I read something about how the Romans were doing creative things between 70-73 ce in different ways to hang men up . it was  torture on a grand scale . so many were be hung that they were running out of wood.

regardless of what ya may have seen in the movies or heard in church there really is only one way to smartly get a body down.

 the pole was stood up it could be lifted and laid down. the nails still need to be removed ,much easier to do when its laying on the ground.

Hi, I never gave any thought to y0ur question until reading this.

I would imagine these crosses were temporary fixtures that could be taken down easily after completing the objective: terminating ones physical life. 

The base that would hold up the fixture like a hole in the ground, (like when we make poles for fences in the ground)  could with the help of perhaps two men and perhaps with the aid of some rope and other tool, be raised out of the base hole to allow the wooden cross structure to fall down and in a controlled fashion by the two men or more instructed to take down the structure.
