What is our Inheritance?

We know that Christ has redeemed us and is sanctifying us and making us like unto Himself, however, what is our inheritance?

With scriptures, please.

Interesting topic, Marilyn. I am surprised at the cricket chirping, LOL.

There are different types of inheritances: permanent, temporary, full, partial, restricted, limited, omitted, etc. My thoughts on biblical inheritance are as follows:

Ephesians 1:14 (KJV) Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

In short, we can call it a blessing, being with Christ for all eternity, an unmerited favor. The process involves justification, sanctification, and glorification, sharing all things in Christ and being grafted into the promises given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as well as the Kingdom age. Is it an inheritance earned?

I like how the LTW defines an inheritance (a partial copy/paste):

συγκληρονόμος (synklēronomos). adj. coheir. A person who shares in an inheritance with someone else.

This word is used in the nt to describe multiple people who inherit together the blessings of a relationship with God. Temporal inheritances in the Bible are usually disproportionally divided in favor of a particular heir, usually the oldest son, but, judging from sources contemporaneous with the nt, the concept and practice of coheirs was generally familiar in the nt world. In Romans 8:17, Paul calls Christians coheirs (synklēronomos) with Christ. Ephesians 3:6 states that Gentiles are joint heirs (synklēronomos) with the Jews of God’s promise. Hebrews 11:9 joins together Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as coheirs (synklēronomos). First Peter 3:7 describes husbands and wives as joint heirs (synklēronomos).[1]

Our inheritance is heaven, enjoying the Lord our God and all the treasures He has stored up for us, for all eternity.  (1 Peter 1:4; Matthew 6:19-20).

@Marilyn C  I always like to turn this verse In Ephesians 1:18 into a question, because I find it so good to ponder: "What are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints!?"  This pondering goes along with "What is man that you are so mindful of him?" (Psalm 8:4)

You already mentioned being conformed to His image, and that is what happens with children who share their parents' life.  But along with image and likeness comes the authority that God gave us in Genesis 1:26, "Let them have dominion." So the King's sons, who have been brought into glory (Heb 2:10), will also rule with their eldest brother, Jesus Christ, who has restored our inheritance to us!

Ruling the nations is something promised to Christ, but then He says we will share in this royal function as He tells the overcomers in the church in Thyatira in Rev 2:27 : "He (overcomer) will rule them (the nations) with an iron scepter." 

And we are told that it is far and away above our human understanding - however (hallelujah!) His Spirit is revealing these things and giving us a foretaste now of the riches (1 Cor 2:9-10)!  Lately, sister, I've been impressed with what is this fellowship we've been brought into!?  It is so, so much higher* and what a privilege it is to communicate and explore these wonders with one another. "Whatever is true; what ever is noble; whatever is right; whatever is pure; whatever is lovely; whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think on these things!"  (Phil 4:8)  Oh what a fellowship of the riches of Christ bestowed on us!!!

* includes all that Christ, the Son of Man, has obtained

I agree with some of what you wrote - `sharing all things in Christ...` but not all `the promises to Abraham.` You see he was promised the land of Israel. We are not privy to that. He was also promised the city which will come down out of heaven from God. We are not in that city. (Heb. 11: 9,  16)

The reference to crickets chirping is an American idiom for silence and inactivity. A good topic that no one had yet participated in.

Before I comment on the topic at hand, I would like to ask if you could create another thread for discussion about your unique country from a biblical perspective. Your thoughts on how and when (i.e., Noah's flood, Pangea, etc.) would be appreciated.

Australia is so diverse in its animals and indigenous people, not found anywhere else in the world. There are so many species of deadly and venomous snakes, spiders, kangaroos, platypus, echidna, wombats, emu, dingo, Tasmanian devil, etc. I am not aware of any fossil records or evidence of them on any other continent.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program:  

Granted, I omitted specific promises that pertain to Israel's promised land grant, boundaries specified in the Bible, multiplying as the sand of the sea, etc. Nonetheless, Jews and Gentiles will share the inheritance of Christ.

Now, the city that will come down from heaven, I take as the New Jerusalem:

John 14:2 (KJV) In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Revelation 21:2 (KJV) And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

I am not adamant about this, but it seems only he that overcometh (Rev. 21:7) will inherit the kingdom and their new eternal home.  

Revelation 21:12-14 (KJV) And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Our faith is built upon a Rock, our foundation (Jesus); all others are sinking sand; it is our foundation. The twelve foundations of the holy city are built upon the twelve who spread the Good News throughout the known world. I suspect the gates represent the twelve tribes of God's chosen people and the Law. The foundation is built upon the Gospel of Christ.

Admittedly, I have wrestled with whether our eternal home will be in the Third heaven, or on earth, in the New Jerusalem. Again, I am not dogmatic in my view, but God's original plan for mankind will be realized in eternity. In that, man was created out of the dust of the earth, on the earth, to tend and take dominion of the world. Therefore, I surmise Earth will be our eternal home.

The Lord mentions the universe almost as an afterthought, His handiwork for His glory. Little is mentioned about the universe and its purpose; it is all Earth-centered.

Imagine the dozens of physics that must come together proportionally and precisely for all life to be sustained and thrive (ocean tides, percent of oxygen, Co2 and other gasses, ozone and magnetic canopies reducing radiation, the precise position of the moon and sun, our location in the galaxy, the ecology system interacting together, the blessing and miracle of reproduction and birth, our recycling hydrology and earth, and dozens of other examples earth is a special place created for man.

The Earth will not be annihilated; it will be refurbished and cleansed by fervent heat and fit for our eternal occupation, as I view it.

2 Peter 3:10 (KJV) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Like other topics in Scripture, such as 'sanctification', there are two inheritances, to simplify things.  One is based on relationship, and the other is earned.  Not knowing which is which is what results in confusion among believers.

I think the best verse that speaks of both inheriances is Rom 8:17 - Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of  God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

I've color coded for ease of explanation.  The red words are about the guaranteed inheritance based simply on relationship.  As a child of God, the believer is guaranteed to live with God for ever.  It is not earned or deserved, but based solely on being a child of God.

The blue words refer to potential inheritance as "co-heirs with Christ", but ONLY IF IF IF believers "share in His sufferings", and the result will be that "we MAY share in His glory", the purple words, a clear reference to His Millennial reign on earth.

Rom 8:17b is also clearly stated in 2 Tim 2:12 - if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us;

Here, "enduring" is equivalent to "sharing in His sufferings" in Rom 8:17.  The result will be to "reign with Him", equivalent to "sharing in His glory" in Rom 8:17.

And, Paul added the negative to this inheritance;  those believers who don't "endure" will be denied "reigning with Him" in glory.

Oh, the chirp, chirp. Yes, I understand. As to starting another thread, not at the moment as we are preparing to go away in our caravan for a few months. I`ll take a small computer but won't have much time except for checking in now and then.

My thoughts on Australia having animals etc that are not in other places is that they would have been good food for the carnivorous animals in other countries. Those who came by boats to Australia would have brought some of those interesting animals. And because we are an Island then Carnivorous animals can`t come (except in zoos).

Now glad you aren`t dogmatic in your view and still considering. So, in Rev. 21: 24 we see the nations of the earth, (as God purposed). Now we, the Body of Christ are called out of the nations (ekklesia) and we will have a glorified body like unto the Lord`s which is not like Adam`s but made for the realms above.

This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house. 

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
