I love bringing my bible to church! As with Biblicist, I want to learn in church and how can you have preaching without the word of God?? I love what small children are sometimes taught that B.I.B.L.E. stands for Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth as it shows that it is our... our instruction guide through life if you will... When you go to work on a car, you take a car manual and not "How to build a refrigerator for dummies".. it just won't do you any good

Writing in my bible, unlining and using the margins have been such a help and I also take a notebook and pen to take notes and learn. Me personally, I can sit and listen to a lecture but if I dont' write it down, I wo'nt get anything out of it! Even more, I can write down questions that I may have or write down things that come to mind such as decisions to spend more time in good hoenst prayer, spend more time reading God's Word and studying it ... whatever it may be. There are time when some of what the pastor says is kind of deep and the Lord reminds me of things from previous message like "Don't forget the bread" and "God knows how to thread your needle".... We had rolls of bread "thrown" at us in that message :)

It is a blessing ot be able to just read along and maybe the Lord will point out something to me while the pastor is preaching... I know a man that is traiing for the ministry and jsut got his preaching license and he said that while Pastor was preaching, he just keep seeing message after message ... outline after outline that was just so obvious to them as the Lord revealed them to him! Sometimes, the Lord shows me things that I might want to teach in a lesson or to my small babysititng children sometime or it might be an answer to pray like "fear thou not".

My mind wanders a lot so having some material to hold onto is very important and it is blessing to know that my pastor believes that Christ and the bible have to be hte focus of the message.. it isn't something that He syas, but something that comes straight from teh Word of God. WHere better to go to find out what Jesus says about something than straight to the Word of God?? My pastor stands on the KJV so there isn't an issue of different versions and for that I am glad of for reasons that I won't mention in order not to hijack this thread... but oh how I'd love to ;)

Returning to what Biblicist said, our Bible is like our textbook for life and why shouldn't we bring it to church or "bring church to our bible" depending? How can we go to church to hear the Word of God and not even have it with us?

Exactly Kitty!

The best way to learn something is to hear it, read it and write it. :emot-hug: By writing down notes [the back of my bulletin is no where near enough for my note taking] hearing the word and reading the scriptures I know that the word is getting even more ingrained into my head.

I don't know anyone who's mind doesn't wander during the service. Sitting and listening to someone talk is a sure fire way for me to fall asleep. :th_praying: Taking notes keeps me engaged in the message and keeps me awake. Taking notes and looking up the passages in my Bible helps the Pastor know that I am following what he is saying as well. Every one of the visiting pastors we have had, always comment to him at how alert, attentive and focused our congregation is. Even though the Pastor reads the scriptures and it's all on the overhead, we all use our own copy of God's word and show an interest in what the Pastor is saying as he preaches.

It's a good example to my children too.

Again, if you went to a college course, or even in high school and you decided not to bring your textbook, since the teacher has one and reads from it, you'd do pretty poorly in the class. Learning God's Word is way more important than anything the World has to teach me. Isn't it important to take notes in college classes? How much more important is it to write down what your Pastor is trying to teach you from the Word of God?

Vickilynn, no one said someone was more holy than another because they bring their Bible to church.

I want my full attention on the MESSAGE of the Scriptures.
:emot-hug:

My pastor encourages us regularly to bring our Bibles to church and look up the verses as he reads them. So I do.

In our Church we have pew Bibles. But normally, we are not there to read, but to hear the devine Law/Gospel message from our pastor.

I can't quite put my finger on it... but this statement troubles me.

me too....I mean if you are not there to read, where do you get the law/Gospel from??? :24:

Shalom,

Can't answer for the original poster, but you guys are missing the point here. The WORD of G-D is not only contained in MY Bible. In our church, the verses are on the screen. Also the pastor is reading them aloud. Both are ways to get the Word, by hearing and seeing. It is not necessary to follow along in MY Bible.

I also write down all the verses and the sermon notes and read at home to verify and expound on the message.

Very simple. Some people are making this complicated and it's not.

Vickilynn, no one said someone was more holy than another because they bring their Bible to church. Any more than someone is more holy for eating Biblically Kosher.

Shalom Bib,

Hey, besides being a complete Red Herring in this discussion about Bibles, your comments about what I eat don't concern me. It's none of your business. :24:

As a preacher, there is nothing better for me to see than people carrying their Bibles into service. And I love to hear the pages rustling after I announce the text and location. Pew Bibles are fine, but I recommend carrying your own, so you can make notes, get familiar with where the books are and so on.

Yes, I do. I like to read the passage along with a preacher. Plus, I like to make notes sometimes.

Everywhere I go, my bible goes. You'd be surprised at how much time you have here and there to investigate the Word... :)

Oh, yes, always! How else can one measure any man's word against Scripture? He may read from one of these horrid Bible paraphrases written more for the benefit of the publisher's bottom line than the Kingdom of God. I wouldn't be without it! Which is why my handbag always has to be large enough to carry everything I could ever need (bar the kitchen sink) but most importantly my Bible.

In Jesus,

Ruth

Yes, it's a little odd. I think I know what they intended to say, but it sure comes across strange.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
