Mike tells the congregation that if they ever hear something from behind the pulpit they've never heard before, or disagree with, to (1) check it out in the Bible themselves first, then (2) come and have a coffee with him and talk about it. Primary doctrines are not debatable, but there are some things in Scripture that can be interpreted in different ways, and people of good faith should be able to do this in an agreeable way. You'll never agree 100% with anybody, let alone your pastor.

Try disagreeing with him when you're married to him! :24:

Amen Eric!!!

I would also add a few, although I must say that while I agree strongly with everything that you said, I'm thankful that you mentioned about the Old and New Testament being the inerrant word of God!!!

1. That Christ's death, burial, and ressurection was enough the first (and last) time that we can't loose our salvaiton, that we do'nt have to "keep getting saved".

2. Believes in the "local church", ekklesia- "called assembly" of born again, baptized believers.

3. KJV Only, in reference to the inerrant and infallible, preserved Word of God

4. Baptism and Communion does not wash away sins, or cleanse of sins, even through the Holy Ghost.

5. Good GODLY music.

There are some doctrines that are really "big" in our minds, such as what Erich listed, and those are really really important, but I think things all the way down to "what is "the church" and "what kind of music is biblical" are also very important... I don't want to go to a church that doesn't have certain standards such as "no premarital sex", I woudl say "RUN!!!" if it did'nt have that standard even! Some more particulars that aren't exactly "Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation" sort of doctrine...

6. Independent, Fundamental Baptist, which isn't just a name.

7. The gift of tongues are not longer in churches today, that ceased when the Bible was completed.

8. Baptism does not wash away original sin, and there are no biblical examples of a baby baptism- baptism is specifically for after salvation.

9. Abstinence from drinking, smoking, etc

If I had a disagreement with something that my pastor said, I woudl probably take it up with him in a meeting, and study it out.... However, I think things like where a pastor stands on things like assurance of salvation (as Worthy categorizes it, OSAS), is VERY important and changes SO many things!! There are certain doctrines that are important, even if they dont affect one's salvation, and I feel it's important to go to a church that teaches that.

If I come across anything that I am not sure of or have heard differently then I take it to God, I check it out in the bible then I pray and ask God to make it clear to me so that I understand fully what is being said.

Not trying to be controversial. I agree with eric 100% however on the issue of abstinence from drinking and smoking etc.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon often referred to as the "Prince of Preachers" smoked a pipe all his life. Just wondered what people thought about that?

Shalom Kittylover,

So, are you saying that if your church did not agree with your position on KJV-only and the sort of music you prefer, that these (all you listed above) would be deal-breakers and you would not attend that church?

Sorry, I never really addressed the original question...

If I was going to a church and disagreed with what was being preached, I guess it woudl depend on what it was exactly... if it was something that "I"m not sure that Hebrews was written by Paul", then that's one thing, but if it's "it's alright to baptize babies", then I'm out of there. If a new pastor comes in and he says that thinks that men shoudln't wear pink ties, that woudl be a little interesting, but I woudlnt leave the church over that. If he said God has no standards on dress or music, that Jesus died, but when he rose, it was only a spiritual rising, not a physical raising, then I'd be praying for God to open the doors to a new church.

However, the question comes, is it better to leave the church you are at and look for a new church, or stay at your church until you find a new one that is based on the Word of God?

I love the smell of pipe tobacco. And I love a good cigar on rare occasions. I doubt very much the Lord is concerned about whether we smoke Cubans or those cheap, stinky grocery store cigars. :emot-wave:

If you disagree with what is being preached in your church. The proper way to express yourself is to speak with your pastor, in privet. If you are biblically correct. You should stand your ground. But remember that expressing your disagreement to the pastor in private or not can bring his wrath or trouble down on you, even if you are 100% in line with what the word of God says. It is every Christians duty to stand bold for the word and against false teaching. Don't think for a minute that just because your pastor is schooled and ordained that it means that you don't have the authority to speak to him about false teaching if he is wrong. Be brave and be aware.

There are no false teachings that should ever be "looked over". Sin is Sin.

Nobody should be telling you wether or not you should leave a church except for God and if He wants you to go He will let you know.

God has a pre-distained plan for every one but He has given you the choice to go down your path or His chosen path for you.

Shalom Kitty,

Thank you, but would you mind reading the OP again? I asked about theological differences, such as OSAS, Predestination, Speaking in Tongues, etc., not whether men should wear pink ties or not.

The question I'm having is what are the deal-breakers as far as doctrine and theological stances when the pastor preaches something that I believe is the wrong interpretation, such as The Rapture or the others I mentioned.

Shalom,

At the time Spurgeon smoked, it was not known how dangerous smoking was.

It is not a wise thing to do knowing what we know about smoking and the dangers it poses for our bodies that actually belong to Jesus. I believe Christians should not do things to their bodies for their own pleasure that knowingly damages their body, but it is not a sin to do so. It is allowing the flesh to rule, so I believe it's not a good or mature or submitted thing to do for a Christian.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
