My dad is a civil war buff .... I got dragged to every battlefield etc as a kid ... anyway, I learned a lot of trivia. Here is a question for you. Do you know where the tune to The Battle Hymn of the Republic came from?

I am looking at an old hymnal that was used in Ohio at church. We sang all four verses often.

In the beauty of the lilies, etc., is verse 4.

I don't have time to type out all the words, but most have already been posted.

1. Mine eyes have seen the glory, etc.

2. I have seen Him in the watch fires, etc.

3. He has sounded forth the trumpet, etc.

4. In the beauty of the lilies, etc. I always just loved this verse

Thanks for reminding me of those beautiful words. Truly a classic in its own rights. God is the Holy God and wants us to be a Holy people. All these scriptures are a real encouragement.

The tune was written around 1855 by William Steffe. The lyrics at that time were alternately called "Canaan's Happy Shore" or "Brothers, Will You Meet Me?" and the song was sung as a campfire spiritual.

Hmm . . . so the old hymnal didn't have:

"I have read a fiery Gospel..."

and

"He is coming like the glory..."

Interesting.
