I tried to find a topic like this, but my internet skills are um...nonexistent. Hopefully I posted this in the right forum. Anyway, how to you biblically be humble? Hopefully this is clear enough. I feel as if I should add some more detail, but I can't think of anything.

This chapter is teaching us that certain things believed or taught among Christians are best left alone if we do not agree. If some believe that pork is verboten, that should be fine with others who do not. By the same token, when a vegetarian is invited by you for a meal, you should accommodate that person by serving vegetarian dishes, and not offend them with roast pork. This would also apply to observing certain days as "holy" days. What Paul is teaching is that Christian love allows for latitude in those things which are within the realm of personal freedom and personal decisions. Neither party should sit in judgment over the other, and all should remember that each one will give account solely for himself, not for someone else. Therefore there is no need for disputes. This does not mean that there should be no teaching regarding such things. Paul says that in God's eyes all meats are *clean*, and that the Kingdom of God does not consist of outward rituals and observances, but inward righteousness, peace among believers, and joy in the Holy Ghost, and that whatsover is not of faith is sin. But there are also specific things from the Law of Moses which are forbidden to all Christians (see Acts 15). There is no circumventing those injuctions. We should always bear in mind that in the NT all churches comprised both Jews and Gentiles, and that Jewish believers would be very scrupulous about matters which meant little to Gentiles. Therefore we have this chapter to clear the air. Today, Messianic Jews generally isolate themselves from Gentile Christians, therefore these issues probably do not come up.

Apparently you are only taking a snippet of Matthew Henry's commentary to support your own views. This is the entire portion of which you missed -- The prophet himself, as a type of the great prophet, asserts his own commission to deliver this message: Now the Lord God (the same that spoke from the beginning and did not speak in secret) has by his Spirit sent me, Isa_48:16. The Spirit of God is here spoken of as a person distinct from the Father and the Son, and having a divine authority to send prophets. Note, Whom God sends the Spirit sends. Those whom God commissions for any service the Spirit in some measure qualifies for it; and those may speak boldly, and must be heard obediently, whom God and his Spirit send. As that which the prophet says to the same purport with this (Isa_61:1) is applied to Christ (Luk_4:21), so may this be; the Lord God sent him, and he had the Spirit without measure. Please don't take snippets of commentaries to support your views. Matthew Henry actually supports this passage as being applied to Jesus -- not to Isaiah in his conclusion!

I went to grade school longgggg ago. I remember learning about mohammed back then. But it was just "mohammed started islam" kind of brief thing in world history. We never learned the tenets or anything like that. But for them to teach things about islam while banning Christianity in the school is outrageous. Ban it all or let it all be taught. No in between. Yeah.. Kinda sad when that happens. In Malaysia schools, Islamic studies are one of the subjects for Muslims, while non Muslims go for morale studies. Although there maybe.. Maybe Sunday schools or bible knowledge studies, they are only offered in certain selected schools, namely schools started by missionaries long time back. But even now, many of these schools are taken over by the government, and crosses are brought down from the schools. I will name you one. Assunta school in Petaling Jaya. Try googling. Lol

Hi Bopeep, Christians are saints in the sense that saint means consecrated to God (as used in the Bible). However, the modern connotation of saint, derived largely from Catholicism, is that of a special Christian – somehow more holy than other Christians. I take it you're speaking of a friend or friends of yours and not actually yourself? In that case, you deal with it by minding your own business. You simply can't get into others' lives to the point where you're trying to tell them what to do, who to date or who to talk to. Unsolicited advice is pretty much always unwelcome advice. You CAN, however, pray for them to go in the right direction.

WillowWood, there is one aspect you may have not thought of. there is much prophecy in the world today. Some of couse is false prophecy. But there are real prophets of God that are prohesying. Plus the first one looks like outright contrivance to me. And none can be confirmed in the presence of other prophets as the scripture says. Perhaps, but if you browse the internet, you can find many other prophets. I have never heard a true prophet of God that prophesied of a post trib rapture. I have certainly heard or read from many different prophets. There may be a prophet that has prophesied of a post trib rapture - but I have never heard or read. Of course as a good student of the bible, when I hear a prophecy I must compare it with the written word of God. I believe the rapture as written by Paul is the trigger for the start of the Day of the Lord (1 Thes. 5) and John shows us the start of the Day of the Lord comes in Rev. 6 at the 6th seal, LONG before the 7th vial ends the week. It is in black and white written down, and hard to deny. And it certainly is in agreement with what else Paul wrote, that God has made no appointment with us for His wrath. No appointment means we won't be there.

If that was the only kind of anger, the injunction to "sin not" would be unnecessary. There are two kinds of anger, one of which is sinful, and one of which is righteous. Cain's anger (Gen 4:6) was sinful since it led to murder. Christ's anger against those defiling the Temple (Jn 2:13-17 and other passages) was righteous because it was directed against the desecration of the Temple. Christians are therefore exhorted to examine the nature and quality of their anger. God does allow us to be angry, but only if it is righteous anger. Anger against things which detract from the glory of God is righteous. A good example is Phineas (Ps 106:30,31) who executed judgment when God was angry with Israel. On the other hand, Moses paid a heavy price for his anger (Ps 106:32,33). He was supposed to speak to the Rock, but he struck it twice in anger instead (Num 20:1-13).

Exactly Ezra, a subtle suggestion and a point in the right direction, then the person can come to the conclusion on their own and will more likely heed it.

One could simply ask "Have you considered what Scripture has to say about your situation? Why don't we talk a look at the Word of God?" A lot of Christians do not really know what the Bible teaches about many things.
